Cardiovascular Health-Related Research (CVD)

The goal of the Programs for Inclusion and Diversity among Individuals Engaged in Cardiovascular Heath-Related research (PRIDE-CVD) Summer Institute at State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Health Sciences University at Brooklyn, NY, is to instruct scientists/clinicians in multidisciplinary approaches to research in cardiovascular health disparities.  The PRIDE-CVD has been in existence for over 18 years and has trained more than 132 scholars from 103 different universities nationwide. 

PRIDE-CVD is uniquely defined by:

  1. Its partnership with minority-led community-based organizations with expertise on health disparities
  2. The living laboratory of Brooklyn, New York, an urban setting in which to conduct health disparities and CVD research
  3. Well renowned faculty from underrepresented backgrounds
  4. A historical context providing 18 years of experience in training and supporting underrepresented scholars
  5. A high success rate from scholars in securing grants, promotions and publications (PMID: 30975303; PMID: 27173042)
  6. Seed funds to generate preliminary data towards a full K- or R-grants application

PRIDE-CVD will continue to contribute significantly to improving the pool of highly capable underrepresented professionals in cardiovascular health research. 

PRIDE-CVD will continue to build on this success and years of experience via the following specific aims:

  1. Select and train qualified underrepresented scientists/clinicians with potential to contribute to the
  2. knowledge in cardiovascular health disparities research. 
  3. Provide long-term tailored one-to-one and peer mentoring with the goal to submit a research grant application.
  4. Provide intensive individualized training and guidance in grant writing and peer review to enhance the capacity for success in research careers. 
  5. Provide financial support for small research projects to facilitate transition to independence. 
  6. Evaluate long-term effectiveness of PRIDE-CVD
