Share your thoughts on Dewsbury Townscape Heritage Initiative
As part of our ambitious new blueprint for Dewsbury, we need your views on the Dewsbury Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI).
What is THI?
The project is funded by Kirklees Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF).
It aims to conserve and sympathetically restore buildings in Dewsbury Town Centre’s Conservation Area. The conservation area includes Northgate, Corporation Street, Foundry Street, Westgate and Market Place.
Which buildings have you restored?
The largest building restored as part of the scheme is Pioneer House. It will be home to 1000s of students as part of Kirklees College in September 2020.
The other buildings restored as part of the scheme include Imsons, Northgate House, 13-17 &7-9 Corporation Street, 28-30 Northgate, and The Black Bull. The final project 9 Market Place is due to be completed in the coming months.
Cllr Peter McBride, Cabinet Member for Regeneration said:
“This is just one of many fantastic regeneration projects benefitting this great town, and the wider North Kirklees Growth Zone. It has set the bar for future projects by demonstrating the importance of working with local businesses and investors to make a town centre thrive. Attractive buildings that sympathetically reflect the heritage of the town encourage existing businesses to expand, new businesses to open and more people to visit.
“However, a project is only truly a success if it has a positive impact on the wider community, which is why I would encourage anyone who spends time in Dewsbury to complete the survey. The results will help us to evaluate the impact of the 3.7M investment and feed into other work around our ambitious new blueprint.
“The momentum started through the THI is being continued, with more buildings in the town centre being improved, thanks to another blueprint commitment to invest in the Dewsbury Revival Grant Scheme will launch in February 2020.”

The survey will run from 5 February until 29 February and can be completed online
