Weather permitting, travel on the following street will be impacted beginning on Friday, April 19, 2024.

Taft Avenue will be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic between Court Street and American Legion Road. This will be a moving operation as work progresses down the roadway and flaggers will be on site to direct traffic through the area.

This lane reduction will facilitate soil sampling in the area. It is anticipated normal traffic will resume by Saturday, April 20.

Revised Traffic Alert – Rochester Avenue

Due to anticipated rainy conditions, the closure of Rochester Avenue between Union Place and Elizabeth Street has been modified.

Rochester Avenue was temporarily closed Wednesday, April 17, 2024, and will reopen for the remainder of the week. Work is expected to resume Monday, April 22, and is anticipated to be completed by the end of the day Friday, April 26. Rochester Avenue will be closed between Union Place and Elizabeth Street during that time.

Access to residences will be maintained. This road closure will facilitate a sewer line repair in the area.

Hydrant Flushing 4/17

Iowa City Water Distribution crews will be flushing hydrants on and around Village Road, Jaimie Lane, and Sterling Drive.

As part of this process, rust from iron pipes may be released and can cause temporary tap water discoloration. If this happens, let the water run until it clears. Wash laundry in the evenings or on weekends, as flushing will take place between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Due to high winds, the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center will close at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2024. Questions? Call 319-356-5185.

Why do we close for high winds?
Depending upon the direction and speed, windy conditions can provide a challenge for the control of litter in and around the Iowa City Landfill. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources requires that we comply with litter control standards in order to maintain our landfill permit. Closing the landfill allows us to contain, control, and pick up wind-blown litter during a wind event.

North Riverside Drive and River Street have now reopened.

Original press release from April 16, 2024:
Riverside Drive is closed between Highway 6 and Park Road due to downed powerlines. The area of River Street at Riverside Drive should also be avoided.

MidAmerican crews are on the scene. The area is closed until further notice.

Temporary detour on 11-Rochester inbound starts April 17

Due to sewer work on Rochester Ave. between Union Place and Mott Street, Iowa City Transit will detour the inbound portion of the 11-Rochester route beginning Wednesday, April 17, 2024.

Depending on weather, the detour will be in place through Friday, April 19, 2024.

• Inbound will detour from Rochester to Post Road to Tudor Drive to First Avenue to Friendship Street to Seventh Avenue to Glendale Road /Jefferson Street to Clapp Street to Market Street.
• Outbound will be normal, per existing detour due to the Rochester Avenue Reconstruction Project: Rochester to Seventh to Friendship to First Avenue to Tudor to Post to Rochester.

A temporary inbound stop has been added at Glendale and Seventh. Two stops on the inbound portion will be closed temporarily while the detour is in place:

• Temporary stop at Seventh and Rochester.
• Stop 7409 at Rochester & Mott.
