Dysphagia Awareness, Care and Exploring Modified Diets

Aims to: Improve responses to the needs of adults with swallowing difficulties

Learning objectives:

  • Understand what Dysphagia is and how it occurs
  • Be aware of the signs and symptoms of Dysphagia
  • Be aware of problems caused by Dysphagia
  • Understand our relationship with food and how that can impact individuals when modifying diets.
  • Promote safer eating and drinking for individuals
  • Explore the IDDSI Levels of texture and fluid modification (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative)
  • Know when and how to refer for a swallowing assessment
  • Understand the Speech and Language Therapist’s (SALT) role
  • Understand alternative feeding.
