Public Speaking Summer Workshop


About the Workshop

We Speak Summer Public Speaking Workshop is a free workshop open to current and rising 6th through 8th graders. The workshop will take place on Saturdays from 2:30 to 4:30 PM, from June 25 to July 23, in the meeting room at the Chantilly Regional Library. During the workshop, students will learn strategies to overcome public speaking anxiety and oration techniques to engage audiences. The workshop will be a great opportunity for students to practice their public speaking skills and improve their public speaking confidence to prepare for the upcoming school year.


Our Curriculum

Week 1 (June 25th | 2:30-4:30):
- Icebreaker activities
- Introduction to public speaking
- Anxiety reduction exercises
- Elevator pitch exercise
Week 2 (July 2nd | 2:30-4:30):
- Impromptu speaking and filler-word reduction speaking exercises
- Public speaking review Kahoot
- Persuasive writing lesson
- Town hall speech roleplay
Week 3 (July 9th | 2:30-4:30):
- Lesson on improving presentation skills
- Shark Tank roleplay
- Socratic seminar preparation
Week 4 (July 16th | 2:30-4:30):
- Socratic seminar
- Final project preparation
Week 5 (July 23rd | 3:00-5:00):
- Final project: Students will present in front of an audience of friends and family. The students will be evaluated by members of the Toasts of Oakton, a branch of Toastmasters International

Meet the Team

Abigail Joseph

Abigail Joseph is the founder of We Speak and will be an instructor this summer. She is a rising senior at Oakton High School and teaches public speaking to elementary schoolers through the Multi-Ed club. She is president of the Multi-Ed club.

Keya Gandhi

Keya Gandhi will be one of our instructors this year. She is a rising senior at Oakton High School and a coach for Congress Debate at Oakton High School.

Pallavi Mamillapalli

Pallavi Mamillapalli will be one of our instructors this year. She is a rising senior at Oakton High School. She tutors middle and high school students at Mathnasium.
