The National Association for Court Management (NACM) recently announced the release of two guides on topics of national importance to the court community – Guardianship and Behavioral Health.

The 2022 update to the Adult Guardianship Guide emphasizes person-centered planning and the least restrictive options necessary for persons who are unable to fully care for themselves. It identifies provisions within the Uniform Guardianship, Conservatorship, and Other Protective Arrangements Act (UGCOPAA), recommendations from the Fourth National Guardianship Summit, and highlights advancements in court programs and initiatives which enhance existing guardianship practices.

The 2022 Behavioral Health Guide emphasizes the importance of addressing mental illness through collaborative efforts of the justice and behavioral health systems. The Guide is presented in support of the work of the National Judicial Task Force to Examine the State Courts’ Response to Mental Illness and the development of statewide multi-branch commissions, committees, or task forces focused on this issue while encouraging all state and local courts to lead and promote systemic change in the ways courts and communities respond to individuals with serious mental illness.

The NACM Adult Guardianship Guide is an essential resource to assist courts in planning, developing, and sustaining a comprehensive court guardianship and conservatorship program. NACM President Kathy Griffin notes in the update to this valuable resource, “The revised Adult Guardianship Guide provides court leaders with awareness of reform efforts which aim to improve oversight and accountability within the guardianship system, while highlighting the proactive work of our nation’s state courts. Through assessment, the identification of trends or patterns, and the implementation of processing changes, court systems are empowered to improve protections for society’s most vulnerable members.”

The NACM Behavioral Health Guide is an essential resource to assist courts in planning, developing, and implementing cross-system collaboration efforts to serve those with behavioral health needs. NACM President Kathy Griffin notes, “Using a collaborative approach, court leaders can identify access to treatment gaps and develop opportunities which are crucial toward improving a community-wide response to the behavioral health needs of vulnerable populations. The Behavioral Health Guide provides tools and resources to assess every aspect of the court system in developing a framework for enhancing court and community responses to those with mental illness.”

Both Guides are available through NACM and are accessible in the NACM Store.

The Guardianship Guide is free of charge through the support of the State Justice Institute and

the Behavioral Health Guide is available free to NACM members with a nominal fee for non-members.
