🌐 Americans with Disabilities Act Anniversary
Join us as we commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act with data from the U.S. Census Bureau about people with disabilities.
On July 26, 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law. This law prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, transportation, public accommodations, commercial facilities, telecommunications, and state and local government services.
Did you know? The Census Bureau collects data on disability primarily through the American Community Survey (ACS) and the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). The ACS produces estimates for states, counties, and metropolitan areas. The SIPP estimates of disability prevalence are broader and encompass a greater number of activities on which disability status is assessed. 4️⃣ Facts About Americans With Disabilities
1. There were 41.1 million people with a disability in the U.S. in 2019.
2. In 2019, 19.8% of the civilian noninstitutionalized population in West Virginia had a disability. That's the highest rate of any state. Utah had the lowest rate at 9.3%.
3. There were 7.9 million people ages 18 to 64 with a disability who were employed in 2019.
4. The median earnings in the past 12 months were $25,270 (in 2019 inflation-adjusted dollars) for people age 16 and over with a disability who had earnings in 2019.

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, setting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a sovereign nation. As we celebrate Independence Day, we reflect on how our Founding Fathers enshrined the importance of statistics as a vital tool for measuring America in Article 1, Section 2 of the Constitution.

🌎 U.S. and World Population Clock
July 11 is World Population Day, and the Census Bureau has a free data tool that provides a quick and interactive overview of the latest estimated population in the United States and worldwide.
The U.S. Population Clock displays continuously updated projections of the total population, including the rate of births, deaths, net migration, and more. These projections do not include members of the Armed Forces overseas, their dependents, or other U.S. citizens residing outside the United States.
The World Population Clock provides a continuously updated world population total, a list of the 10 most populous countries, and easy access to more world population statistics.
Visit the clock at census.gov for an estimate of the world population and an indication of how fast it is growing.

July 11: World Population Day
The United Nations celebrated the first observance of World Population Day in 1989. The Census Bureau conducts demographic, economic, and geographic studies of other countries and strengthens statistical development around the world through technical assistance, training, and software products.
🔎 Did you know? The world population reached 1 billion in 1804, shortly after the second decennial census in 1800, which counted 5.3 million Americans.
According to the latest estimates, the world population reached 7 billion in 2012, and new projections indicate that we’ll reach 8 billion in the coming years.
