Rocklin’s Chris and Laura Didier were the guests of U.S. Rep. Kevin Kiley at this week’s State of the Union address, highlighting the growing crisis of fentanyl-related deaths across the nation. The Didiers lost their 17-year-old son Zach to fentanyl poisoning in 2020, after he took a pill he thought was a prescription pain pill that was really a fake pill made with fentanyl.

On Feb. 7, 1933, James Stewart, Auburn Mining engineer, was found not guilty of a charge of disturbing the peace.
He was initially charged and arrested by Placer County probation officer L.J. Kinney on Dec. 13, 1932, after Stewart verbally upbraided Kinney for his handling of a destitute case in Placer County.
At issue was a family in dire straits living in an abandoned house in Dutch Flat without adequate clothing or food. The couple had seven children. James and his wife discovered the family while distributing Red Cross supplies to needy families.
Mrs. Stewart immediately brought it to the attention of Officer Kinney and requested he bring the children to Auburn for proper care and have the mother admitted to the hospital, but Kinney said he had no funds to assist the family.
After her request was turned down a second time, Mr. Stewart confronted Kinney in his office, resulting in the charge.
This was during the Great Depression and scenes like this played out all over the country. Of particular note is that for the 1939 Auburn Gold Show, people voted for the “Number 1 Citizen” and James Stewart won, beating out notable Auburn resident Guy Lukens by garnering more than double the votes.
