On May 16, 1936, readers of The Placer Herald were informed that John Hurd, whose family had relocated from Washington state to Auburn a few years prior, would represent the U.S. fencing team in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany.
His mother accompanied him to Berlin where he helped the U.S. team place a respectable fifth in fencing. Mrs. Hurd, deceived by Nazi propaganda, later described to several social organizations in Auburn the wonders of Hitler’s Germany.
John Hurd graduated from Harvard University in 1937 and joined the U.S. Navy. He served in the North Atlantic during World War II as a surface warfare officer on destroyer escorts where he earned a Bronze Star with Combat V, which, according to the U.S. Navy, is awarded to “denote combat heroism or to recognize individuals who are exposed to personal hazard during direct participation in combat operations.”
After he retired from the Navy in 1946 at the rank of commander, Hurd entered the oil business in Texas and got involved in politics. In 1970, President Nixon appointed John Hurd as ambassador to South Africa, a post he held until 1975. He died in Texas in 2001.
