Public Health Resources for Migrant Populations in Consulates
Public Health’s Community and Field Services Division in SPA 4 has been working with the Mexican, Guatemalan, Honduran, Salvadoran, and Nicaraguan federal governments/Consulates General to outreach hundreds of migrants in Los Angeles each week, engaging them in public health education around topics such as nutrition, COVID and flu prevention, and Hands Only CPR. Along with educational presentations, tangible resources are provided to participants, such as hygiene kits, menstrual supplies, and emergency preparedness products. Since April 2023, these presentations have also begun to include trainings on identifying and reversing opioid overdoses, giving participants free naloxone. Each event is tailored specifically for immigrant populations, many of whom are of indigenous Latin American descent, and designed to capture audience members’ attention while they wait for their federal documentation to be processed.
