Iowa College & Career Readiness Academy 603: Supporting Graduation, College, & Careers for English Learners (3 Grad Credits)
This course identifies challenges and potential barriers unique to families new to the U.S. or have students developing their academic English language proficiency and targets actions that schools can take to support English Learners better as they work toward graduation and prepare for their transition to college or career training programs.
Topics in this course provide an opportunity for schools and educators to evaluate current academic plans and systems of support available to English Learners in schools, including ESL and content course accessibility, CTE courses, concurrent or dual enrollment opportunities, and work-based learning opportunities grounded in academic support. Participants will evaluate how current school offerings may or may not provide equitable access to graduation and college and career readiness for English learners and consider promising practices that will boost academic achievement for English learners. Participants will also connect areas of the Iowa District Career and Academic Plan (DCAP) with specific actions needed to support immigrant and refugee students and families.
