Duties

As a Career Specialist you will have the opportunity to engage with clients from diverse backgrounds including the justice involved, housing affected, and act as a liaison to our WorkSource center programs. You will also have the opportunity to build relationships with partners inside the WorkSource system as well as within the community. You will be part of a team that values new ideas and innovative process improvements. Not all of our ideas succeed, but we strive to create a culture and work environment that empowers our staff to try.

What a typical day looks like:
Conduct individual interviews to articulate program services and activities.
Identify components applicable to customer need.
Develop recommendations for continuous engagement.
Keep informed of available external resources and referrals.
Facilitate job preparation activities to include job club services and workshops.
Provide labor market information.
Attend rapid response events in the community.

This is an in-training opportunity this position will be hired as a WorkSource Specialist 3. You will be required to successfully complete the training plan in order to promote to the next level of the series until the goal class of WorkSource Specialist 4 is reached.
Salary ranges for these levels are:
WorkSource Specialist 3: $40,152 - $52,536 annually depending on qualifications.
WorkSource Specialist 4: $44,184 – $57,948 annually depending on qualification

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

WorkSource Specialist 3:
  • A Bachelor's degree in social science, business administration or related field.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in workforce development, social or human resource services, public relations, or professional public contact work. 
OR 
  • A combination of education and/or relevant experience totaling no less than six (6) years.
OR 
  • One (1) year of experience as a WorkSource Specialist 2 within the Employment Security Department, or in an equivalent class with another state's Employment Security agency.  
 
*Such as: unemployment insurance, social services, human resource services, education, public relations, benefits programs, insurance claims, law enforcement and banking.

A Master's degree will substitute for one year of the required experience.
 
Additional Requirements of Employment:
  • The ability to travel daily to provide services to our customers and community partners.
  • Must pass an Unemployment Insurance (UI) Fraud Check.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
 
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
 
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
