It is simple: we can't do research without research participants. Participants devote their time and effort to improving the health of all Americans because, through research, doctors and scientists learn how well something might work to diagnose, treat, or prevent disease or health conditions. Acknowledging their contributions can go beyond compensation and be expressed in various ways. For the New Mexico CEAL team, also known as WEAVE NM, centering trust is at the core of their community-engaged research work. Through their academic-community partnerships, they are co-creating culturally aligned interventions to address health disparities. Fabiola Rodriguez, a community leader and promotora de salud (community health worker) in the frontera (southwest border area), collaborates with WEAVE NM to amplify the voices of community health workers. Together, they are working on Unidos Sanamos, or "Together We Heal," a project focused on community-centered solutions for health equity. Check out a recent interview to hear from Fabiola and learn how Unidos Sanamos is bringing together diverse traditions across New Mexico to empower community health workers and promote healing through cultural preservation: https://bit.ly/4gAWC9x #NIHCEAL #CHW #Promotores

NIH is currently leading the development of a Disability Research Strategic Plan. The plan will identify scientific themes and develop goals and objectives to advance research activities that promote the health and well-being of people with disabilities. As part this process, NIH is engaging with diverse communities to get their input regarding the health and research concerns and unique needs and preferences of people with disabilities. Listen in to the first in a series of discussions on October 30 at 3:30 p.m. ET and register for others at: https://go.nih.gov/ZFhYqG7 #DisabilityResearch #research #science #NIH

A new study co-authored by NIMHD Director Dr. Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable and led by researchers in his lab reveals insights into how tobacco biomarkers (substances related to tobacco exposure in blood and urine) vary widely among populations by race, ethnicity, and Latino heritage. For example, smokers of Puerto Rican heritage had higher levels of these markers than Mexican or Central American populations. Smoking cessation programs need to be tailored to address these differences. Read more: https://bit.ly/49MK252 National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute #NIMHDResearch #HealthDisparities

NIMHD's new research spotlight on peer coaching interventions for Black adults experiencing hypertension was featured in NIH CEAL's recent newsletter! Check out the Research Spotlight and other updates ⬇️
Did you know that more than half of Black adults in the rural Southeastern United States have been diagnosed with hypertension? Distance and high transportation costs can make it difficult for patients to attend regular doctor’s visits to manage their blood pressure (BP). Peer coaching for patients with BP offers guidance from trained community members, and practice facilitation improves clinical outcomes. A recent National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) study found that these methods provide hope for addressing chronic conditions in the most affected areas. Learn more about the study in our latest newsletter: https://bit.ly/3DaUx5B #BloodPressure #CommunityHealth #ChronicConditions
