IDIS 280: Interdisciplinary Seminar on Issues of Youth

(Fall Semester is IDIS Part 1 and Spring Semester is IDIS Part 2)

This course is designed specifically as a training course for AmeriCorps members who will be serving with youth in a number of different settings on the Eastern Shore of Maryland during the service year as part of ShoreCorps/PALS. Material presented will be focused on selected topics related specifically to service learning, adolescent and child development, and conflict resolution, which will assist participants to work with youth in the context of their families and communities. Emphasis will be given to the concept and practice of service learning and to individual member development. The course will also serve as a vehicle for building esprit de corps among ShoreCorps/PALS members.

This course will:

  1. Increase members' knowledge of youth development and psychology in order to assist members in applying that knowledge in the implementation of programs for youth.
  2. Improve members' knowledge about and utilization of conflict resolution skills.
  3. Enhance members' understanding of service learning and, in turn, themselves.
  4. Promote a sense of community and civic responsibility among AmeriCorps members.
