Exhausted and demoralized fighting COVID-19 in Portland ICU: ‘We just feel helpless’

They lie still and silent in medically induced comas. They’ve been “proned,” moved onto their stomachs, to help their damaged lungs function. Some have been here at Providence Portland Medical Center for months.

They are the sickest COVID-19 victims at the Northeast Portland hospital. Most are alive only because they’re connected to ventilators or ECMO machines, mechanical substitutes for patients’ hearts and lungs.
