Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

A special enrollment period (SEP) is an opportunity to enroll in or make changes to private coverage outside the annual open enrollment period due to certain life events, like having a baby, getting married, moving to a new area, or losing other health coverage. If you qualify for a SEP, you usually have up to 60 days following the event to enroll in a plan.

The Department of Human Services has started requiring annual renewals to check eligibility for public health care programs again. A SEP is available to people who are no longer eligible for Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare.
