Flint-based company KUHMUTE celebrates launch of micromobility charging network

FLINT, MI - On Thursday, July 28, KUHMUTE, celebrated the launch of their Flint network of micro-mobility charging stations at one of their host sites, Marketplace Apartments. KUHMUTE offers the first multi-modal charging network available for micro-mobility transportation options like electric bikes and scooters.

The Marketplace Apartments station represents the seventh installation of 14 total sites that will be located around the city of Flint. The mission is to design and build the charging network for anything smaller than an electric car.

Peter Deppe, co-founder and CEO, initially started KUHMUTE as a thesis at Kettering University. He launched the company four years ago.

“I met with a mentor of mine and we were looking at startups we can jump into,” he said, a 2020 Kettering graduate. “Since we are in Michigan, wanted to take advantage of unfair mobility. We saw scooters had an issue of being a mess everywhere and were super expensive to run. We figured if we provided charging hubs just like cars have, it can alleviate a lot of those pain points.”

KUHMUTE is equipped with a vehicle adapter made from Nylon and Stainless Steel, so not only is there access to charging — it creates a secure way to lock the vehicle to a hub.

The location at Marketplace Apartments has seven slots to use.

“We have exceeded our own expectations,” Deppe said. “We have a lot of other projects coming up we are really excited about across the U.S. and Canada. We’re going in the right direction.”

Samantha Fountain, economic development director of the city of Flint, was present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. She has worked with the city for over one year.

“This is a big forward movement in Flint for micro mobility,” she said. “It’s going to be easier to get place to place in Flint and it’s going to spur the local economy. There is definitely a need for it.”

KUHMUTE has its own charging mobile app.
