How can we improve?

We at FHWA need your help! We’ve just released a Request for Information (RFI) called Improving Road Safety for All Users on Federal-Aid Projects. The goal is to learn what we can do to help you build Complete Streets and Complete Networks and improve the safety of Federal-aid transportation projects for all road users in your area.

For instance, do we need to make changes to the FHWA Design Standards regulation? Are there other regulations in need of an update? Also, how do you think the safety performance of Federal-aid projects should be assessed? How can we implement countermeasures and strategies that improve safety performance of Federal-aid projects?

These are just some of the questions we are trying to answer. That’s where you come in.

Please read the RFI and give us your feedback. When you get there, you’ll see 27 questions grouped in six topics:

  • Improving Road Safety for All Users
  • Design Standards for the National Highway System
  • Safety Performance Assessment Applicability
  • Conducting a Safety Performance Assessment
  • Safety Performance Assessment Process Evaluation and Outcomes
  • Safety Performance Assessment Implementation Considerations

Your information will be invaluable as we assess what strategies, programmatic adjustments or regulatory changes, and resources and guidance can assist you with advancing projects that improve safety and accessibility for all those traveling on our roads.

Nearly 43,000 people died on our roads in 2021. More than one third of those were people outside of automobiles – pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists. Please help us identify solutions and actions as we work with you in pursuit of the goal of achieving zero roadway deaths.
