Preventing Overwintering Vertebrate Pests in BuildingsAs temperatures start to cool, opportunistic vertebrate pests, such as squirrels, mice, rats, racoons, bats, birds, and skunks will seek shelter from the impending cold weather. As they set their sights on homes, schools, and other buildings, these pests gain entry through cracks and crevices in foundations, around windows, or through holes chewed in trim. Join us for this free webinar to learn how to prevent these fall invaders and how these pests can pose health risks if they enter buildings. Beech Leaf and Bark Diseases: Emerging Threats to Beech TreesThe iconic American beech tree has been a prized commodity for centuries by people for its dense, shady canopy, form, stature, smooth bark, and the many nuts that benefit wildlife. There are two main beech-specific diseases of concern: beech leaf disease (BLD) and beech bark disease (BBD). These diseases also attack the European and other beech varieties. Both debilitating diseases can result in death to the tree. This webinar will address disease identification and recommendations for preventing and treating the beech trees to ensure survival. Presenters: Cameron McIntire (U.S. Forest Service) and Paulo Vieira (USDA Agricultural Research Service) |

Managing Rodents with Integrated Pest Management and New TechnologiesUrban environments present unique pest challenges, especially with rats and mice. New and improved approaches, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, are helping address these challenges. During this webinar, renowned experts will share information on rodent behaviors that participants can use to refine their pest management programs. Lessons learned about specific control practices will also be discussed. The importance of integrating tactics, such as sanitation, habitat modification, exclusion, and rodenticides, will be highlighted. New AI tools, such as smart cameras and sensors, to aid pest management professionals will be described in detail. Presenters: Claudia Riegel (New Orleans Mosquito, Termite, and Rodent Control Board) and Kevin Thorn (Thorn Pest Solutions). |

Protecting Boxwoods Against Blight and the Box Tree MothBoxwood blight is a fungal disease that first appeared in the U.S. in 2011. It affects all types of boxwoods. Once the fungus is present, its symptoms are only reduced by pesticides. There is no treatment to cure boxwood blight; however, there are preventive treatments. Speakers during this free webinar will review how to identify this disease and the steps to take to prevent the blight from spreading to other boxwoods. Additionally, this webinar will discuss the box tree moth, another significant pest of boxwoods. Experts will describe the importance of quarantines, as well as the lures, traps, and other integrated pest management-based controls for this pest. Presenters: Chuanxue Hong (VA Tech Ag Research Extension) and Gregory Simmons (USDA-APHIS) |

Fungal Disease Management for Ornamental PlantsFungal pathogens are imported into the U.S. on ornamental plants with regularity. These pathogens can have significant impacts on the ornamental plant and landscape industries. In this free webinar, participants will receive an introduction to common fungal diseases of ornamental plants and their prevention and management. The origins of fungal pathogens on imported plants, their identification, as well as the causes of occurrences with plant production facilities will be discussed. Our expert will describe the importance of Integrated Pest Management, including the role of cultural practices, non-chemical controls, and the selective use of fungicides. Highlights of current research and practical control experiences will be shared. Presenters: Jean Williams-Woodward, Ph.D., (University of GA); Marcia Anderson, Ph.D., (U.S. EPA) |
