Given the predicted high temperatures this week (The Met Office), it's worth remembering some basic top tips to make sure you, your family and pets stay safe.

Wear sunscreen

It sounds obvious, but sometimes we do forget that even the odd half-hour in the sunshine can mean getting sunburnt. And, it doesn't always need to be sunny, you can burn even when it is cloudy.

Remember to also cover up both your body and also your head - go for a wide brimmed hat if you can and some cool shades to go with it!

Visit the NHS website for advice on sunscreen and sun safety.

Stay hydrated

Make sure that you keep hydrated and pop a bottle of water in the fridge to take with you when you are going out and about to ensure you avoid becoming dehydrated (NHS advice on dehydration).

Plus, don't forget to keep pets hydrated too. The RSPCA has great advice on keeping your pet healthy in the heat.

Take care around open water

It's really important to take care around open water, rivers and canals. Bedfordshire Fire Service have advice on their website about water safety.

Social distance

Remember to keep social distancing if you are out walking / cycling / exercising - do everything you can to stay safe and keep pressure off the NHS.
