Spring construction begins!

Favorable weather conditions this year are allowing construction planning to progress along the Green Line Extension. Above are photos of a few of the areas that will have upcoming traffic impacts starting this spring.

SouthWest Station to City West Station


Construction overview:

At the SouthWest Station, we are constructing a new park-and-ride ramp adjacent to the existing ramp and a combined bus and LRT station. Moving east, the Prairie Center Drive LRT Bridge extends from the SouthWest Station area over Technology Drive and Prairie Center Drive. Moving east, LRT will enter the Eden Prairie Town Center Station area. An LRT bridge will cross over I-494, parallel to Flying Cloud Drive. Flying Cloud Drive is being reconstructed and LRT track installed. LRT will travel on bridges over Flying Cloud Drive and Nine Mile Creek. The Golden Triangle Station is being constructed as well as an LRT bridge over Shady Oak Road and Highway 212.

  • Activities are focused within the rail corridor and near SouthWest Station into spring.

City West Station in Eden Prairie to Shady Oak Station in Hopkins

 

Upcoming:

  • Expect a 3-day lane closure on Yellow Circle Drive starting March 25 for utility work at the lift station.

Ongoing:

  • K-Tel Drive/5th Street is closed to through traffic until early summer for road, utility, and rail work. Follow posted detour signage. See Hopkins detour maps.

Construction overview:

There are three stations in Hopkins: Shady Oak Road, Downtown Hopkins and Blake Road. Major structures in Hopkins include an LRT bridge over Excelsior and a regional trail underpass at Blake Road. In addition to LRT track construction there is also freight rail and regional trail work in the area. There are multiple LRT and freight railroad crossings at roadways.

Upcoming:

  • There will be a closure of 17th Avenue South between Excelsior Boulevard and 1st Street South starting March 18 for approximately 10 weeks for intersection improvements. Local and emergency vehicle access will be preserved during the closure. See Hopkins detour maps.
  • Expect lane closures at Jackson Avenue/Milwaukee Street beginning March 18 for six weeks for sidewalk and median work.

Ongoing:

  • K-Tel Drive/5th Street is closed to through traffic until early summer for road, utility, and rail work. Follow posted detour signage. See Hopkins detour maps.
  • The west sidewalk on Blake Road remains closed at the rail crossing. Use the sidewalk on the east side of Blake Road.
  • The northeast and southwest sidewalks at Excelsior Boulevard and Jackson Avenue/Milwaukee Street remain closed into spring.

Construction overview:

Like in Hopkins, the project includes the construction of LRT track, freight rail track, and the regional trail. There are also three stations in St. Louis Park: Louisiana Avenue, Wooddale Avenue and Beltline Boulevard. Structures in this area include LRT and freight rail bridges over Louisiana Avenue, a connection between freight lines, a pedestrian/trail underpass east of Louisiana Avenue, freight, LRT and trail bridges over Minnehaha Creek, a regional trail underpass at Wooddale Avenue, freight, LRT and trail bridges over Highway 100 and a regional trail bridge crossing over Beltline Boulevard.

  • The east sidewalk on Louisiana Avenue north of Oxford Avenue remains closed into spring.

West Lake Street to West 21st Street

 

Ongoing:

  • There continues to be significant construction at the Kenilworth LRT tunnel. LRT tunnel construction is primarily focused on excavation, cutting of metal sheets, and concrete placement as weather permits. Truck transport and maintenance work on the freight rail tracks may cause noticeable noise and some occasional vibration to nearby residents.
  • Pumps and generators will run overnight periodically in various parts of the construction corridor, especially at the Kenilworth LRT tunnel site. Pumps are used to manage water, and generators are used to power the pumps as well as to power equipment that keeps pipes or other elements warm during freezing temperatures.


Bryn Mawr Station to Glenwood Ave

 

Upcoming:

  • Expect a full intersection closure of Royalston Avenue and Holden Street starting March 18 for LRT track work. There will also be a full road closure of Royalston Avenue between 5th Avenue North and Border Avenue starting March 18 for utility and road reconstruction work. This work is anticipated to be completed in fall 2024. See Minneapolis detour maps.

Ongoing:

  • The sidewalk on the west side of Penn Avenue South across the I-394 bridge will remain closed into spring.

Ongoing:
  • Trails in the Opus area in Minnetonka have reopened. There may be periodic short-term closures in the future for any additional work needed.
  • The Minnesota River Bluffs Trail between Shady Oak Road in Minnetonka and 11th Avenue in Hopkins is anticipated to reopen in 2024.
  • The Minnesota River Bluffs Trail between 11th Avenue and Excelsior Boulevard in Hopkins is open.
  • The segment of the South Cedar Lake LRT Trail between Excelsior Boulevard and Blake Road in Hopkins remains closed and is anticipated to reopen in 2024.
  • The segment of the South Cedar Lake LRT Trail from Blake Road to Chowen Avenue South in Minneapolis is open. There will be periodic short-term closures this spring/summer for additional work as noted above; additional short-term closures may be required and will be posted in future construction updates.
  • South Cedar Lake LRT Trail users between Chowen Avenue South and the Midtown Greenway in Minneapolis may experience brief delays to accommodate adjacent construction. The trail remains open and flaggers may be present. Trail users may experience construction traffic crossing the trail in this area – please use caution.
  • The segment of the Kenilworth Trail from the Midtown Greenway to West 21st Street is closed for LRT tunnel construction and is anticipated to reopen in 2025. 
  • The segment of the Kenilworth Trail from West 21st Street to the Bryn Mawr Station area remains closed and is anticipated to reopen in 2025.
  • The segment of the Cedar Lake Trail from the Bryn Mawr Station area to Van White Boulevard is open. Trail users may experience construction traffic crossing the trail near the station – please use caution.
  • The segment of the Cedar Lake Trail east of Van White Memorial Boulevard is anticipated to reopen in 2025.
  • The Luce Line Regional Trail bridge that crosses the freight rail corridor connecting Bryn Mawr Meadows Park with the Bassett Creek Valley Station area is closed and is scheduled to reopen in 2025.

Project staff share the community’s desire to see the trails reopen as soon as possible. The project office will continue to work with the contractor to improve on these opening dates.
