More than 5.6 million affected, 109 killed and 260 000 ha (640 000 acres) of crop area destroyed by floods in Assam, India

More than 5.6 million people have been affected across Assam, India, as severe flooding continues to wreak havoc in the state. Since May 22, at least 109 people have lost their lives in flood-related incidents and around 260 000 ha (640 000 acres) of crop area has been ravaged, according to the official daily status report on Sunday, August 2, 2020.

A total of 5 689 584 people have been affected across 30 districts of Assam since the monsoon season began around late May.

At least 109 people have been killed as of Sunday.

The state government has set up 621 relief camps for the affected families. The State Disaster Relief Force, National Disaster Relief Force, Circle Office, Civil Defense, and Inland Water Transport and several local volunteers are involved in rescue operations.

As many as 81 678 have been evacuated. In addition, around 260 000 ha (640 000 acres) of crop area has also been ravaged.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had recently visited areas hit by flooding and landslides to assess the situation. 

National authorities and the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) are providing help for Assam, as well as other flood-affected states in India such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Heavy rain with isolated thunderstorms are expected over most parts of eastern, central, and northern states on August 4.
