Mental Health and Substance Abuse Recovery

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in the United States:

  • Over 20 million adults have a substance abuse disorder and more than 42 million suffer from a mental illness, both diagnosed and un-diagnosed.
  • Over 90 percent of individuals with substance abuse disorders and more than 50 percent of people with mental health challenges do not get the help they need.

The Road to Recovery

Overcoming addiction, achieving sobriety, or managing a chronic mental illness requires a lifelong commitment. Those who have achieved and maintain recovery demonstrate extraordinary determination and strength every day.

Now, the COVID-19 pandemic has created new stressors for all of us, particularly for those with mental and/or substance abuse disorders. This year, more than ever before, people may be facing extreme challenges to maintain their recovery. The social, emotional, and economic foundation needed for recovery has changed during the pandemic, but many people continue to rise to newfound challenges and keep pushing forward.

Working Together

We can all help spread the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, treatment for substance abuse is effective, and people can and do recover. In fact, recovery is a daily process for many. Together, let’s celebrate all recovery successes and work to engage those with mental and/or substance abuse disorders who need our help and support
