Press sources report that Carles Esteva Mosso is set to leave his post as Deputy Director-General for State Aid at the Competition Directorate-General of the Commission and join the legal firm Latham & Watkins. According to reports in a number of daily newspapers, this firm has professional links with Lufthansa, providing it with legal advice on state aid, antitrust matters and mergers. Lufthansa is a direct competitor of Alitalia and other major airlines in the Member States.

In view of the above:

Can the Commission confirm whether this news is true, and if so, does it see a conflict of interest here that could seriously distort competition?

What further measures has the Commission taken and will it take to ensure independence and transparency in decisions regarding airlines (such as the Alitalia/ITA case)?
