Please note that rules may vary slightly at select events due to local laws and ordinances. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the rules published in the event athlete information guide prior to race day.

Course Contingencies

Traffic Impact

Temporary road closures will begin at 5 a.m. The following are all estimated times based on New York State Police traffic control. Please use caution and expect delays. 

  • Road closures (Route 86) Southbound to Lake Placid from Wilmington beginning at 7 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.
  • Bobrun Lane will be closed in both directions from 7a-3p.
  • Route 86 westbound from Jay to Wilmington will close from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Route 9N will close Northbound from Keene to Jay at 6 a.m until 5 p.m.
  • Haselton Road will be closed in both directions from Bilhuber Road to the Black Brook town line from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Haselton Road from Route 86 to Bilhuber Road will be open only Northbound from 8 a.m -5 p.m.
  • Bill Huber Road will be closed for the bike portion of the race.
  • Road closures (Route 73) south/eastbound from Lake Placid to Keene beginning at 5 a.m. until 4 p.m.
  • River Road will be restricted to local traffic ONLY.

Notice to residents and businesses along the Wilmington Road from the traffic light to the Alpine Cellar:

The route for cyclists will travel out and back on Wilmington Road/Route 86 from Northwood Road to the traffic light on Main Street at the Route 73 intersection.  Thank you for your understanding and please use caution when exiting your residence as there will be bikes in both directions and they will be traveling in the opposite lane of traffic.

  • LAKE PLACID TO JAY From Saranac Avenue/Route 86, go left at Main Street at the High Peaks Resort to Mirror Lake Drive. Left on Northwood Road. Left on Cobble Hill Road. Left on Route 86 to Wilmington. Right on Route 86 to Jay. Expect delays in the Village of Lake Placid, in Wilmington, and in Jay from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • AUSABLE FORKS TO WILMINGTON North on Main Street at Stewart’s to stop sign. Left on Guideboard Road. Bear left at fork to Silver Lake Road. Left on Bonnieview Road to Wilmington. Expect delays at intersection in Wilmington.
  • AUSABLE FORKS TO SARANAC LAKE/LAKE PLACID North on Main Street at Stewart’s to stop sign. Left on Guideboard Road. Bear left at fork to Silver Lake Road. Left on Union Falls Road to Route 3. Left on Route 3 to Saranac Lake. In Saranac Lake take Route 86 East to Lake Placid.
  • AUSABLE FORKS TO KEENE Route 86 West, crossing Jersey Bridge to Sheldrake Road. Right on North Jay Road. (County Route 64). Left on Valley Road (County Route 58). Right on Trumbulls Corner Road. Left on Route 9N South to Keene. Expect delays in Ausable Forks and at Route 9N intersection.
  • SARANAC LAKE TO I-87 SOUTHBOUND Route 3 West to Tupper Lake. Route 30 South to Long Lake. Route 28N to Newcomb. Route 2 East to Exit 29 on Route I-87 or Route 28N to Warrensburg.
  • POINTS SOUTH ON ROUTE I-87 : From Northbound Route I-87 take exit 29 to Route 2 West to Route 28N. Turn right on Route 28N to Newcomb. Route 28N to Long Lake. Right on Route 30 to Tupper Lake. Right on Route 3 East to Saranac Lake. Take exit 30 for travel to Keene Valley, Keene or Lake Placid. Expect delays at Keene.
  • POINTS NORTH ON ROUTE I-87 TO LAKE PLACID From Southbound on Route I-87 take exit 31 to Route 9N North. Route 9N North to Elizabethtown. Route 9N North to Route 73. Right on Route 73 to Keene. Expect delays at the intersection in Keene.
  • KEENE TO LAKE PLACID Route 73 Westbound lane open. Expect Delays at River Road/Ski Jumps intersection. Access Village of Lake Placid via Old Military Road.
  • LAKE PLACID TO WILMINGTON/AUSABLE FORKS/I-87 NORTHBOUND From Saranac Avenue/Route 86, go left at Main Street at the High Peaks Resort to Mirror Lake Drive. Left on Northwood Road. Left on Cobble Hill Road. Left on Route 86 to Wilmington. Straight through intersection on Bonnieview Road (County Route 19). Right on Silver Lake Road and follow detour arrows to Ausable Forks. Expect delays in the Village of Lake Placid and in Wilmington from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Course -General

1. Where can I find the race course maps?

See above.

2. What are the course cut-off times?

Swim: The swim course will close 2 hours and 20 minutes after the last age group athlete starts the swim. Each athlete will get the full 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete the 2.4 mile swim regardless of what time they enter the water. Athletes who take longer than 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete the swim will receive a DNF.

Bike: The bike course will close at 5:30PM. Athletes arriving at the bike dismount line after 5:30PM. will not be permitted to continue. 

Run: The run course will officially close at 12 midnight.

Finish line: The course closes at 12 midnight.

3. What nutrition will be available on course?

Course -Swim

1. How many laps is the swim?

The swim consists of 2 laps. 

2. What kind of start does this race have?

The swim will be a rolling start. Athletes will enter the water in a continuous stream through a controlled access point, similar to how running road races are started. An athlete’s times will start when they cross timing mats under the swim arch.

Athletes will be directed to self-seed on race morning based on their projected swim time. Volunteers and staff will be in the staging area with signs and will assist with this process. Self-seeding will not be mandatory but will be encouraged.

Age group athletes will begin to enter the water at 6:35 am. It is expected to take 25-30 minutes for all athletes to enter the water; everyone will be in the water by 7:00 am.

3. What is the expected water temperature?

4. What are the wetsuit restrictions?

Wetsuits are permitted if the water temperature is up to (and including) 76.1 degrees Fahrenheit (24.5 degrees Celsius) or colder. Wetsuits cannot measure more than 5 mm thick.

Wetsuits will be prohibited in water temperatures greater than 83.8 degrees Fahrenheit (28.8 degrees Celsius).

Athletes who choose to wear a wetsuit in water temperatures 76.2 degrees Fahrenheit (24.55 degrees Celsius) and up to 83.8 degrees Fahrenheit (28.77 degrees Celsius) will not be eligible for Age Group awards, including World Championship or Rolldown slots.

The De Soto Water Rover and the Speedo Elite Triathlon Wetsuit with forearm flaps wetsuits are PROHIBITED.

Athletes should contact the wetsuit manufacturer directly to confirm whether their suit is legal.

Race officials will be monitoring athletes on race morning to enforce wetsuit restrictions.

5. If wetsuits are prohibited, what are the swimwear restrictions?

Swimwear (Skinsuits/Speedsuits) must be 100% textile material, which is defined as materials consisting of natural and/or synthetic, individual and non-consolidated yarns used to constitute a fabric by weaving, knitting and/or braiding. Simply put, this would generally refer to suits made only from nylon or Lycra that do not have any rubberized material such as polyurethane or neoprene.

Swimwear must not cover the neck, extend past the shoulder, nor extend past the knees. Swimwear may contain a zipper. A race kit may be worn underneath swimwear.

6. In the event of a non-wetsuit swim, am I allowed to wear my compression gear?

Yes, provided that it is made of 100% textile material (no rubberized material such as polyurethane or neoprene) and that materialdoes notextend past the elbows or knees. Any compression wear that extends past the elbows or knees will not be permitted in non-wetsuit swims (this includes compression sleeves, compression socks, or compression tights).

7. Are snorkels permitted?

Snorkels are not allowed under any circumstances for any IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 event.

8. What should I do if I am having a problem in the water?

If you are struggling and decide that you require assistance do your best to remain calm, raise your hand high into the air/shout to get the attention of the support boats and move to the outside of the course if you are able. You can hold on to a boat without being disqualified as long as the boat does not provide propulsion. There will also be resting rafts available throughout the course.

Course -Bike

1. How many laps/loops is the bike course?

The bike consists of 2 laps. 

2. Are disc wheels permitted?

Yes. However, race organizers reserve the right to restrict use depending on conditions.

3. How frequent are the distance markers on the bike course?

The bike course will have a distance marker every 10 miles. They will be in miles only, so if you are used to kilometers please accustom yourself to the conversion.

4. How many aid stations will there be and how are they spaced?

Course -Run

iPods, MP3 players, phones, video cameras etc. are not permitted on the course.
