CSMM partners with Syracuse University's Center for Sustainable Community Solutions (CSCS) to conduct statewide technical assistance, stakeholder engagement, facilitation, community outreach, and education. CSCS leads SMM related trainings, events, and publications, including the following projects and ongoing programs for waste reduction, reuse, and recycling:

  • Recycle Right NY (RRNY) is a comprehensive outreach and education campaign informed by more than 140 recycling professionals to spread the message “Know Before You Throw” to residents throughout New York State. RRNY’s website provides resources and tools to help residents access their local recycling information as well as a “recyclopedia” of item-specific information. RRNY highlights specific topics on posts across social media platforms, which are then uplifted and amplified by the RRNY stakeholder group members (including local recycling coordinators, managers, educators, etc) to unify industry voices across the state.

  • Publications and guidance on strategic SMM topics are developed in response to timely needs and SMM industry development and policy shifts. For example, the Foam Container, Void Fill and Protective Packaging Alternatives Guide was developed to help food service providers and retailers identify alternative options in response to the legislative ban on expanded polystyrene foam.

  • Through this paid opportunity, college students learn the fundamentals of waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and organics management. These students or “SMM Stewards” engage with regional projects to help New York communities strengthen and improve their recycling systems by providing direct assistance to address local SMM needs.

  • Direct technical assistance and stakeholder engagement facilitation is provided to counties, municipalities, institutions, and schools districts that support local and regional SMM solutions.
