If you live in Kansas, there’s something to look forward to in 2023.
Your grocery bill is coming down.
A state food sales tax cut is now in effect. Governor Laura Kelly made a strong push for the cut in 2022.
As of New Year’s Day, the sales tax on food in Kansas has dropped from 6.5% to 4%.
The cut applies to food and food ingredients.
There is no change, however, to the sales tax on alcohol, tobacco and certain prepared foods.
This is just the first step.
If all goes according to plan for the Kelly, the sales tax rate will stay down and will keep coming down until the tax is eliminated.
A year from 2023, the sales tax will drop to 2%, and on Jan. 1, 2025, Kansas is currently set to see the elimination of that sales tax.
A couple of things to keep in mind, local sales taxes remain in effect. Only the state sales tax has been eliminated.
There’s also an initiative by gov. Kelly to get lawmakers to approve new legislation to eliminate the food sales tax this year.
