As of New Year’s Day, the sales tax on food in Kansas has dropped from 6.5% to 4%

MARTIN AUGUSTINE IS WITH US. THIS IS ALL DUE TO THE TAX CUT BEING IN EFFECT. MARTIN: YES. IT DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU ARE SHOPPING AT THE HY-VEE OR ANYWHERE ELSE IN KANSAS. THE SALES TAX RATE IS COMING DOWN, AND WILL KEEP COMING DOWN UNTIL IT WILL BE ILLUMINATED ALTOGETHER. AS OF NEW YEARS DAY, THE SALES TAX ON FOOD HERE IN KANSAS DROPPED FROM 6.5% TO 4%. THE CUT APPLYING TO FOOD AND FOOD INGREDIENTS. THERE IS NO CHANGE IN THE SALES TAX YOU PAY ON ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, AND CERTAIN PREPARED FOODS. THIS IS JUST THE FIRST STEP. A YEAR FROM NOW THE SALES TAX WILL DROP TO 2%, THEN ON JANUARY 1, 2025, WE WILL SEE THE ILLUMINATION OF SALES TAX ON FOOD UNLESS SOMETHING HAPPENS ON THE STATEHOUSE. GOVERNOR LAURA KELLY SAYS IT IS ONE OF HER LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES TO GET A PACKAGE DO THE STATEHOUSE IN TOPEKA TO ELIMINATE THE SALES TAX RIGHT NOW. WE WILL SEE HOW THAT GOES. If you live in Kansas, there’s something to look forward to in 2023. Your grocery bill is coming down.A state food sales tax cut is now in effect. Governor Laura Kelly made a strong push for the cut in 2022.As of New Year’s Day, the sales tax on food in Kansas has dropped from 6.5% to 4%.The cut applies to food and food ingredients. There is no change, however, to the sales tax on alcohol, tobacco and certain prepared foods.This is just the first step.If all goes according to plan for the Kelly, the sales tax rate will stay down and will keep coming down until the tax is eliminated.A year from 2023, the sales tax will drop to 2%, and on Jan. 1, 2025, Kansas is currently set to see the elimination of that sales tax.A couple of things to keep in mind, local sales taxes remain in effect.
