First look at plans for Plymouth’s new adult care facility

Plymouth City Council is investing in a brand new adult social care service, which will support adults with learning disabilities by offering a combined day and respite service in one central location.

The state of the art, modern and accessible building is being designed specifically to support people with a wide range of disabilities and complex needs. It will include 12 en suite bedrooms and six self-contained apartments with their own courtyard gardens to offer short respite breaks.

The facility will also include different spaces for activities such as sensory rooms, art rooms, gardens, and a kitchen.

Located on the site of a disused depot on Outland Road, which was once home to the Council’s parks department, the facility will benefit from easy access to Central Park as well as strong transport links throughout the city.

Councillor John Mahony, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said: “As a councillor for Peverell Ward, I’m extremely pleased that we’re transforming a disused piece of land at the edge of Central Park into a centre of excellence which will benefit Plymouth residents by improving our existing adult social care offer, with the proximity to the park an added bonus for residents, visitors and staff.

“We are delighted to share how this fantastic new facility may look, along with more detailed plans that showcase the thought that has gone into this project to ensure that it will successfully meet the needs of some of our most vulnerable residents, supporting them and their families.”

Once built, the centre will replace the current daytime support offer at The Vine in Whitleigh and the respite provision offered by Colwill Lodge in Estover.

Local residents are invited to learn more about the scheme at an initial event on Friday 17 March at the Meadow Café in Central Park from 10am to 3pm, ahead of a formal consultation as part of the planning process.

An online consultation will also be running on plymouth-consult.objective.co.uk/kse/ from 17 March.

Demolition of the existing depot buildings on the site is currently being carried out. A full planning application will be submitted later this year, ahead of the procurement for the construction of the new facility.
