What You Need to File a Tax Return

DOR urges everyone to wait to file their tax returns until they receive all their official tax documents and statements.

Attempting to file without all required information can delay a refund if one is due.

Documents you need to file

  • All W-2s from all employers (include spouse’s if filing jointly)
  • All 1099s for contract income of $600 or more from all employers (include spouse’s if filing jointly)
  • Prior year local and state tax refund(s)
  • Medical savings account distributions (1099-MSA)
  • Social Security benefit income
  • Unemployment income
  • Rental property income
  • Investment income (including interest, dividend, and foreign investment income, and proceeds from the sale of bonds or stocks)
  • Miscellaneous income (1099-MISC)

Other required information

  • Your Social Security number
  • Your spouse’s Social Security number (if applicable)
  • All dependent Social Security numbers (if applicable)

If you file a single federal income tax return, you must file a single Indiana individual income tax return. If you file a joint federal income tax return, you must file a joint Indiana individual income tax return.

DOR encourages customers to use electronic filing, online payment, and direct deposit to significantly improve the accuracy and speed of the return and refund processes.
