Huge sandstorm hits central Iran
A massive, terrifying sandstorm hit the provinces of Yazd and Rafsanjan in central Iran on Sunday, April 26, 2020.
The storm occurred at dawn, with wind speed reaching up to 130 km/h (81 mph). A witness said day turned into night when the gigantic sandstorm covered the skies.
The sandstorm was triggered by a system predicted to bring severe weather from Turkey to Saudi Arabia. Strong winds were expected to cause blowing sand and dust in areas where rain is not wetting the ground.
Prior to the sandstorm in Iran, high winds already wreaked havoc across Egypt on Friday, April 24, as a major sandstorm forced closure of several ports and highways in the country. Authorities warned people to stay inside, particularly those with respiratory illnesses.
