About the bulky waste collection service

Bradford Council provides a bulky waste collection service for domestic properties in the District.

There is a charge for this service and a limit of 3 items per collection.

Collections can be booked, subject to availability. We will tell you when your waste will be collected when you book and pay for your collection.

Residents must only book collections for domestic waste from their own property.

Before you decide, did you know that you can reuse, donate or sell your old furniture or dispose of items safely using your local Household Waste Recycling Centre?

New to me re-use service

We offer a re-use service called ‘New to me’ which means that people on a trip to the tip may end up coming back with more than they set off with!

Our Household Waste Recycling Centre at Bowling Back Lane offers goods which have been left at our various recycling centres and which are still considered to be useful. Staff at each recycling centre in the district look out for items in good condition which have been left by residents and these items will be transferred to the New To Me shop.

Commercial waste

Businesses, including Landlords are unable to use this service as this is deemed as commercial waste.

Commercial Waste will only be accepted at our two main Transfer Stations where there are weighbridges in place and payment can be taken.

Commercial waste includes any waste from:

  • Leftover waste/material from tradespeople making improvements to your home (electricians, joiners, builders, gardeners and plumbers)
  • A residents own business (of any kind)
  • Improving or cleaning up a property that you rent out
  • Any other commercial activity

If you have a business, you have a Duty of Care for waste and must:

You have extra responsibilities if you’re dealing with hazardous waste.

For more information, please visit the GOV.UK web page about disposing of business and commercial waste.

There are many private providers and outlets available for collection and disposal of commercial waste.

Electrical items

These can be recycled and can be taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre. If you are unable to transport large electrical items you can book an electrical waste collection.

We work with specialist recycling contractor (Weelink Ltd) who collect and dispose of unwanted large domestic electrical items. Where possible they will try to reuse, repair or recycle electrical items.

From 1 April 2023 the prices for electrical collections are:

Number of items Charge
1 to 3 appliances £16
4 to 5 appliances £20
Two person jobs £30

Request an electrical waste collection now

It's your responsibility to remove personal data from electronics before collection.

They will only collect a maximum of two appliances per visit to the property such as a fridge freezer or washing machine (American fridge freezers excluded). Wiser will not take fridges or freezers if they do not have a door on them because all of the main parts are in the door so they can’t recycle them properly. You may put smaller electrical goods such microwaves or vacuum cleaners with the larger items.

Large electrical items should be placed at the front of the premises at ground floor level with clear access before 6am on the day of collection. They will not collect appliances from the back or rear of a property, inside or where there are steps or stairs to climb.

Please note that this service is for domestic properties only – it does not cover commercial properties or businesses.

Leaving out your waste

Once you have booked your bulky waste collection and been told when your collection date is, please ensure that:

  • all items are kept in a safe and accessible place ensuring that they are dry and in a reasonable condition
  • soft furnishings, such as sofas and mattresses, are covered to protect them from the weather
  • all items are made safe by securely taping up doors and loose wires, and the item is emptied
  • gates are unlocked and access to the items is clear

Please note that collection staff will not enter homes, sheds, garages and outbuildings.

Contact us

To make a payment and arrange for a bulky waste collection please fill in our bulky waste collection online form or call 01274 431000.

We will tell you the date your waste will be collected when you book and pay for your collection.

How do I pay?

You can pay online through our secure payment system or by debit or credit card if you book a collection by telephone.

Collections will not take place until payment has been received.

Can I pay on the day?

No, our crews are not able to take payment on the day. Payments must be made in advance of the collection.

I pay my Council Tax, why do I have to pay for this service?

The collection of domestic waste is governed by the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Controlled Waste regulations 1992. Under regulation 4 of the Controlled Waste Regulations, the Council can charge for the collection of certain materials which include:

  1. Any article of waste which exceeds 25 kilograms in weight.
  2. Any article of waste which does not fit, or cannot be fitted into:
    1. a receptacle for household waste provided in accordance with section 46; or
    2. where no such receptacle is provided, a cylindrical container 750 millimetres in diameter and 1 metre in length.

Where will my money be going?

The Council will not make any profit from the charges – all the money received will go to fund the service being provided.

Will the cost be more for bigger items?

No – the charge is the same for any item.

How many items will you take for the maximum charge?

Up to 3 items will be collected for £50.

Am I charged per item?

No, not per item, but there is a scale of charges (see above).

Do I have to pay every time I use the service?

Yes. You will be charged according to the number of items you want collecting and can use the service as many times a year as you wish.

Will there be an additional charge if I have more items to be collected on the day?

The crew can only take items listed for collection on the day. Any extra items will not be taken. If you have extra items, please contact us at least 2 days before the collection day to add them.

What day and time will my items be collected?

Both collection services operate on a postcode basis. Your collection date depends on your postcode.

Bulky items are collected Tuesday to Friday, 6am to 5pm.

Electrical items are collected Monday to Friday, 6am to 5pm

Can I request a refund?

In the event you wish to cancel your collection, confirmation of this must be made by telephone 2 days before the scheduled collection date for a refund to be made.

Is the charge refundable if the items are not collected?

If the reason for non-collection is because the Council does not attend, for example, due to bad weather conditions, we will attempt to collect the items the following collection day for your postcode. However, if you wish to cancel in such cases a refund can be given.

If we attend the address and the items:

  • are not presented at all
  • are presented in such a way that means we cannot safely collect them
  • the property is secured and we cannot gain access

then no refund will be possible.

What is fly tipping?

Fly tipping is where people illegally dump waste onto the highways, footpaths or land. Fly tipping is a crime and offenders can be fined up to £50,000 upon prosecution.

If you see anyone dumping waste please note as many details as possible and call 01274 434366 or report it online straight away.
