    HOV

    NOW OPEN (effective 10/24/2023)

The High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes were added as an additional inside lane in each direction on I-75 between 12 Mile Road and South Boulevard (approximately 14 miles) in Oakland, County. This was the first of its kind in Michigan!

HOV lanes require at least two human occupants inside the vehicle when used on weekdays between 6-9 AM and 3-6 PM. The exception is motorcycles, transit buses and police and emergency vehicles. Outside of those designated weekday hours the lanes are available for all motorists regardless of the number of occupants.

State and local police monitor safe movement in and out of the HOV lane and to ensure drivers have the correct number of people. Civil infractions are handed out to violators.

    Drainage Tunnel Now Accepting Stormwater

The I-75 Modernization tunnel drainage system is now in place and ready for the next rainstorm. This important piece of the project was built to help alleviate future flooding on the I-75 freeway from 8 Mile Road to 12 Mile Road.

    Facts about the tunnel:

    • It is four-miles long, 14.5-foot diameter up to 100 feet underground and generally under I-75’s northbound service drive between 8 Mile and 12 Mile Roads.
    • Can hold up to 25 million gallons of stormwater which is equivalent to almost 40 Olympic size swimming pools!
    • Began construction in the Fall of 2019, experienced a delay in 2021, and is now complete.
    • Construction utilized a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) with a rotating cutting wheel with teeth at the front that dug the soil while it turned. Miners in the tunnel installed 5-foot-long precast concrete wall segments within a shield to protect them. Hydraulic jacks at the back of the TBM pushed against the ends of the wall segments after they were installed to force the cutting wheel into the soil and move the tunnel forward.  Once its job was complete, the TBM was decommissioned and repurposed for another tunnel construction project.  There is a great video we published accessible on the linked page below to see this process in action.

We are grateful for the opportunity to support the community with the addition of this drainage tunnel and thank everyone for their patience as it was constructed. We have resources on our project website to learn more about how the tunnel was built and how stormwater flows into the tunnel once it reaches the roadway.

    In the know:
    High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes

HOV lanes have opened along I-75 in Oakland County. These lanes, one running northbound and one running southbound on the inside lane, have been added to I-75 between 12 Mile Road and South Boulevard.

When are the HOV lane hours of operation?

The clearly marked left-hand lane opens for HOV travel only during peak weekday travel times. At all other times, the lane is open for general traffic with no restrictions.

The HOV lane runs from 12 Mile Road to South Boulevard (approximately 14 miles):

    • Peak hour operations are 6-9 AM & 3-6 PM
    • Regular lane operations remaining hours

Who can use the HOV lane?

The HOV lane can be used by all vehicles with two or more people. Motorcycles are welcome in the HOV lane, too.

How do I enter the HOV lane?

To enter the HOV lane, check for oncoming traffic in the lane, signal, and enter the HOV lane at traffic-speed.

How are the HOV lane rules being enforced?

State and local police are monitoring for safe movement in and out of the HOV lane and to ensure drivers have the correct number of people.

How will I know where the HOV lane starts and ends?

Signage is posted to warn of the upcoming start or end of the HOV lane, with information on operating hours.
