Flu vaccine: protecting yourself from flu this winter
Free flu vaccinations are available for pregnant women, children aged 2 and 3 and people with long-term health conditions.
Flu vaccination – who needs it and why?
Some people are more susceptible to the effects of flu. For those people, it can increase the risk of developing more serious illnesses or can make existing conditions worse.
The vaccine provides the best protection available against the virus and reduces the risk of you passing flu on to others. It’s best to have the vaccine before the flu starts to circulate, which is usually from December onwards.
A number of local health professionals have created videos in various languages to explain more about the flu vaccination. The videos can be found on the Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes CCG website.
It’s especially important this winter
With the flu and Covid-19 circulating at the same time this winter, it’s even more important for those who can to have their flu vaccination. People vulnerable to COVID-19 are also at risk of complications from flu.
The vaccine won’t protect you against Covid-19, but will against flu. Not only is flu an unpleasant and potentially serious infection, but according to Public Health England, research shows that if you get both at the same time you may be more seriously ill.
Flu clinics will run differently this year
If you are at risk from the complications of flu, your GP will invite you to attend a flu clinic. Safety measures will be in place to keep patients and staff safe; your practice will let you know how they will be delivering flu clinics before your appointment.

Get a free NHS test today to check if you have coronavirus
Anyone with coronavirus symptoms can get a test.
Coronavirus symptoms are:
- a high temperature
- a new, continuous cough
- a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste
You can get a test for someone you live with if they have these symptoms. Do not get tests for people you live with who do not have these symptoms.
Stay at home if you have symptoms
If you are getting a test because you have symptoms, you and anyone you live with must stay at home until you get your result.
Anyone in your support bubble must also stay at home.
Have you downloaded the NHS COVID-19 App?
The app is available for smartphones only - not tablets, smartwatches or other devices.
To get started, go to Android's Google Play or Apple's App Store and search for "NHS Covid-19".
The handsets must have Android 6.0 (released in 2015) or iOS 13.5 (released in May 2020) and Bluetooth 4.0 or higher. That excludes the iPhone 6 and older versions of Apple's handsets.
