"When I tell people I’m an AmeriCorps alumna who’s working to open doors to higher education for incarcerated youth, headed to Harvard graduate school, they make certain assumptions about my life. When I tell them I was working as a stripper before I was 18 years old, inducted into a fraud ring, spent more nights in jail, they’re almost certain to make assumptions about how the rest of my life will play out. The thing is, both stories of my life are true." Shani struggled throughout her young adulthood. Today, she is helping youth with difficult life experiences create a better path—thanks, in part, to her experience with AmeriCorps and Impact Justice. Read Shani's inspirational journey. ⤵️

During AmeriCorps' 30th anniversary, we also celebrate the second anniversary of Public Health AmeriCorps. Read more from Public Health AmeriCorps Director AJ Pearlman: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted and accelerated the need for a more robust public health workforce. But, throughout the disproportionate impact of the pandemic and social determinants of health in our communities, AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers were the boots on the ground, supporting more than 12 million Americans. In April 2022, we announced Public Health AmeriCorps, our historic partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to meet the public health needs of local communities and help rebuild the nation's public health workforce by supporting the recruitment, training, and development of a new generation of leaders. Two years later, I'm grateful for the opportunity to have met more than a few of the nearly 4,000 AmeriCorps members who address our communities' most pressing public health needs every day. Recently, I spent time with our members serving with Public Health AmeriCorps members at Sinai Community Health Institute in Chicago. More than 20 AmeriCorps members support patients who come into the hospital with various challenges, helping individuals connect to care, navigate the health system, and access any additional resources they need. One member, Candice, shared how she wants to be a public service leader. During her service, Candice established a resource closet at the hospital because she wanted to see the patients leave with the dignity they deserve. Last week, I also celebrated National Public Health Week with American Public Health Association. I heard from members who lived through the community's public health challenges, those who transformed their lives by gaining professional experience through service, and from program supervisors who see how our members create lasting change in the community every day. Through discussions, I had the opportunity to hear the positive impact our members are making. Jennifer, a Recovery Coach with Marshfield Clinic Health System, shared how she started her service journey without any experience in public health, but a passion for helping people was all that was needed to serve. I'm excited to see how AmeriCorps members like Candice and Jennifer will continue to make a difference in our communities and, in the near future, in the public health workforce. #PublicHealthAmeriCorps #AmeriCorps30 #Volunteer #WorkforceDevelopment

Happy two-year anniversary Public Health AmeriCorps! 🎉 🥳 🎊 In 2022, we partnered with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to fill the gaps in our public health systems weakened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, 4,000 AmeriCorps members have served with Public Health AmeriCorps at more than 1,000 sites across the country to meet the health needs of their local communities! Together, we have advanced more equitable health outcomes, created pathways to good public health jobs for people with diverse backgrounds and lived experiences, and helped to rebuild the public health workforce with greater representation from the communities it serves. Public Health AmeriCorps is good for the health of our communities, it’s good for organizations, and it’s good for those who serve. Join us in celebration and read more via the AmeriCorps blog. ➡️ Bit.ly/2YearsPHA And let us know if you’re currently serving or have served with Public Health AmeriCorps in the comments. ⤵️ #AmeriCorps #PublicHealthAmeriCorps #Service #NationalService #PublicHealth #PublicHealthCareers #PublicHealthJobs #Community #CommunityHealth

We had exciting new opportunities to celebrate the agency’s 30th anniversary across the nation in March! Throughout the month, AmeriCorps celebrated our milestones and efforts, as well as our members, volunteers, and alumni for AmeriCorps Week. During the first week of March, AmeriCorps CEO joined U.S. Department of Education Deputy Secretary Cindy Marten, national service champions, and leaders at SXSW EDU to discuss how service has been supporting our nation’s education needs for the past 30 years and hear about the impact of Americans who answered President Biden’s call for 250,000 additional people to serve in evidence-based, student support roles. President Biden also announced plans to further support tutors and mentors, highlighting the importance of initiatives like National Partnership for Student Success during his State of the Union address.
