A Message from OEM - 'Tis the Season for Winter Weather

The City of Kirkland is getting ready for winter weather, and you should too! Winter in Kirkland is beautiful, but it can come with hazards. Winter weather can consist of snow, ice, and/or freezing rain, often accompanied by dangerously low temperatures. Please take some time to get ready for severe weather before it happens to help keep yourself and your community safe!

Get Ready for Winter

  • Monitor local weather.
  • Familiarize yourself with Kirkland snow plow routes and plan accordingly.
  • When snow is forecast, please park in your drivewary or garage so Public Works crews and first responders can access the street.
  • Stock up on emergency kit items in case you have to stay home during a storm.
  • Create a vehicle emergency kit.
  • Prepare for possible power outages.
  • Know that Waste Management (WM) may delay collection services due to inclement weather or icy road conditions. You can get daily service information by calling 1-800-592-995 or at servicealerts.wmnorthwest.com/kirkland.

The City is getting ready for snow incidents too! This video explains more about Kirkland's snow response:

Amy will be coming to classes and events (including CERT!) in 2022 and we are excited to have her on board!

Goodbye to Karissa Smith

Karissa Smith, the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, has accepted a position with the City of Auburn as their Emergency Manager starting in January!

Karissa is very grateful for her time with the City of Kirkland and has had a blast teaching CERT, working with the Kirkland Emergency Communications Team (KECT), staffing preparedness booths at community events, and getting to work with so many amazing volunteers and community members. She is very excited for this next step in her career.

The Emergency Preparedness Coordinator position will be posted soon.

NWS Survey

The National Weather Service (NWS) is exploring potential changes to the way it displays and communicates frost and freeze events, and is asking for public feedback.

Please take a minute to take this short survey to help with NWS messaging!
