Who is at Risk for Delirium?

 

The following factors can cause or worsen delirium:

  • Dementia
  • Serious illness, such as advanced cancer or infection
  • Being hospitalized
  • Recent surgery or anesthesia
  • Previous or current brain injury, disease, or infection
  • A bladder catheter
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Broken bones
  • Lack of sleep
  • Chronic pain that is not managed
  • Dehydration
  • Poor nutrition
  • Poor eyesight or hearing
  • Lack of mobility
  • Withdrawing from drugs or alcohol
