The DOE Omni Technology Alliance Internship Program provides paid 10-week summer internships for up to three consecutive summers for talented undergraduate and graduate students in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and other related fields.

Interns will hold appointments at DOE national laboratories, Power Marketing Administrations (PMAs), plants, DOE Headquarters, and other approved sites.

Interns will receive hands-on experience in an immersive environment that provides them with an understanding of the mission, operations, and culture of DOE. Moreover, interns will be mentored by leading scientists, engineers, and other top professionals to address cybersecurity and information technology challenges while gaining valuable, real-world experience to complement their education and explore opportunities for careers within the federal government.

Why should I apply?

You will:

  • Receive financial support including a stipend and travel allowances for summer internships.
  • Have the opportunity for progressive and rotational internship assignments for three consecutive summers while pursuing a degree.
  • Participate in and contribute to DOE mission-related activities under the guidance of cyber security and information technology experts and/or DOE staff.
  • Learn and collaborate with cybersecurity and information technology experts at DOE-approved facilities working to address the nation’s most critical cybersecurity challenges, and establish long-term relationships between yourself, cyber and IT experts, and DOE and/or contractor staff.
  • Explore future career opportunities with DOE and gain a competitive advantage as you apply your education, talent, and skills in a variety of setting across the entire DOE complex.

Am I eligible?

You must meet the following requirements to be eligible for an internship:

  • Be at least 18 years of age by June 3, 2024.
  • Be a U.S. citizen. Selected candidates must provide suitable documentation to verify citizenship as requested.
  • Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited institute of higher education or an institution approved by DOE, and be pursuing a degree in cybersecurity, information technology (IT), engineering or other IT-related fields
    OR
  • Be a recent graduate who has graduated with an associate's degree or bachelor's degree, has completed a combined BS/MS program, or has completed a graduate degree program in cybersecurity, information technology (IT), engineering or other IT-related fields. The time period between receipt of an undergraduate or graduate degree and starting the Omni Program must be two years or less.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0/4.0.
  • Be available to participate in the full 10-week appointment beginning on June 3, 2024. Exceptions to the proposed schedule may be considered on a case-by-case basis to accommodate candidate’s academic schedule.

What will I receive?

  • Stipend: A stipend will be provided for this internship.
  • Travel: Travel reimbursement will be provided for inbound and outbound expenses for participants who relocate more than fifty miles, one-way, from the assigned hosting site. Depending on your project assignment, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for travel and educational experiences which promote the educational goals of your appointment.
  • Housing Allowance: A housing allowance will be provided. You will be responsible for securing your own living space and determining your means of local transportation prior to arriving at the designated host site. Hosting facilities may provide assistance locating appropriate housing in the local area.
  • Virtual Appointments: Appointments may be hosted virtually at the discretion and approval of the host site or facility.

  • Transcripts/Academic Records - Unofficial transcripts or copies of the student academic records printed by the applicant or by academic advisors from internal institutional systems may be submitted. Transcript or academic records must clearly show:
    • your name
    • name of the academic institution
    • enrollment during the winter/spring academic term
    • in progress/completed courses
    • grades and most recent cumulative GPA, and
    • degree in progress.

    Documents must have all social security numbers, student identification numbers, and/or dates of birth removed (blanked out, blackened out, made illegible, etc.) prior to uploading into the application system.

  • Academic or Professional Recommendation - You are encouraged to request a recommendation from a professional who can speak to your abilities and potential for success as well as your academic merits, scientific capabilities and personal characteristics. Recommendations from personal (non-professional) acquaintances such us friends, relatives, neighbors are discouraged. Recommenders will be asked to complete a recommendation in Zintellect. Recommendations submitted via email will not be accepted.

Notes:

  • All documents must be submitted via Zintellect. All application components must be received in the system in order to be considered.
  • Do not forget to check the status of your recommendation. You may check the status of your recommendation at any time from your Zintellect Dashboard. You may request more than one recommendation but only the first one received will be attached to your application. Your application is not available for consideration until your application is completed with a recommendation.

Program Details

  • Application Selection

    Applications will be reviewed for eligibility and compliance before moving forward to the merit review and final selection.

    DOE will review applications for merit and relevance, and make final selections. DOE may conduct interviews with candidates before making final selections to assess their qualifications and interest in available projects. ORISE will notify you if selected for the program. Formal offers will be sent through Zintellect.

  • Hosting Facilities

    Opportunities may be available at DOE national laboratories, Power Marketing Administrations (PMAs), plants, DOE Headquarters in Washington, D.C., and other approved sites across the United States. Available appointments at hosting facilities will be determined by DOE.

  • Conditions of the Appointment

    Verification of enrollment: At the time appointment is accepted, you must provide proof of enrollment during Spring academic term.

    • Copy of the official transcript issued by the Registrar’s Office including official university markings such as the registrar’s signature, university logo or stamp, letterhead or watermark, etc. Transcript must include courses in progress during the Spring academic term.

    Length of Appointment: The program will run for a 10-week period over the summer from June 2024 to August 2024. Exceptions to the proposed period may be considered on a case-by-case basis to accommodate the candidate’s academic schedule.

    Health insurance: You are required to have health insurance coverage during your appointment period and to provide proof of coverage prior to the start of your internship. If you do not have health insurance coverage, you may purchase health insurance through ORISE. Health insurance costs will be covered by the program on a case-by-case basis upon approval of the OMNI Program Manager.

    Final report and Surveys: You will be required to write a final report about your internship experience. Additionally, you will be required to submit pre- and post-internship surveys to assess the effectiveness of the program.

    Facility Access and Security Clearances: You will be required to adhere to the existing policies, regulations and procedures of your hosting facility including security clearance, and health and safety requirements including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

    Internships are contingent upon receipt of the necessary approvals to access the assigned facility/office. While you will not enter into an employment relationship with DOE, or any other agency, you may be required to complete a background check and drug testing based on site guidance. Your appointment is contingent upon the favorable outcome of the background check and drug testing.

  • Nature of Appointment

    This program is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).

    Interns will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, or hosting laboratory.  Instead, interns will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

  • To be considered you must be pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Data Analytics, Software Engineering, Policy/Oversight, Artificial Intelligence, Operational Testing, Malware Analysis, Forensics, Network Analysis, and other related fields.

  • To apply, you may upload unofficial transcripts or copies of the student academic records printed from internal institutional systems. If selected, you will have to provide official documentation as proof of enrollment. Proof may include one of the following:
