We spoke with Dr. William Tsai, Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. The many public servants at NIMHD are passionate about the institute’s vision of an America in which all populations will have an equal opportunity to live long, healthy, and productive lives. We are excited to spotlight Dami Kim, Operations Coordinator in the Division of Intramural Research. For Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, she reflects on the origin of her commitment to improving health outcomes for all communities. “Being a daughter of Korean Immigrants, I was able to see how health care is not just given under certain circumstances, you may need to fight for it. Being a translator for my parents’ doctor visits, I discovered my passion for public health and advocating for others. I consider myself really blessed to be part of NIMHD because I’m making a difference to help people from medically underserved communities, like my parents, to get fair access to health care.”

Climate-related disparities impact the health of some of the most vulnerable among us. In a recent Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention researchers found that unprecedented heat waves can affect all people, but some are more sensitive to the effects of heat, including children and adults with underlying health conditions, pregnant women, and outdoor workers. The Alliance for Community Engagement – Climate and Health (ACE-CH) promotes sustainable change in communities facing health disparities due to climate stressors like heat waves. The Mountain West ACE-CH Hub works with rural and urban focal communities in Colorado to understand how communities are experiencing climate stressors, such as heat waves, and identify opportunities to advance climate justice.
