Tomorrow is #WorldFishMigrationDay! We're highlighting NOAA Marine Habitat Resource Specialist Eric Hutchins, who stands out for his nearly 40 years of service and tireless efforts to restore fish habitat in New England. He championed dam removals to restore migratory fish populations in the 1990s, when the concept seemed revolutionary—or even impossible—to many. Since then, he's been involved with more than 50 dam removals, which opened 523 miles of rivers and streams for migratory fish. We're celebrating the work ethic, sense of humor, and enthusiasm for educating others Eric brings to his career with NOAA, furthering our mission by helping migratory fish and communities. We're celebrating the career and retirement of Dr. Charles "Stormy" Mayo from the Center for Coastal Studies (Provincetown, MA), where he served as senior scientist and the director of their North Atlantic Right Whale Ecology Program. Stormy has dedicated more than four decades of his life and career to conserving and studying marine species, especially North Atlantic right whales: https://bit.ly/4dykUjV We thank Dr. Mayo for the way he courageously pioneered large whale disentanglement techniques, participated in numerous disentanglement efforts, brainstormed improvements with colleagues, and dedicated his life’s work to learning all he could and advocating for these amazing giants. Celebrating big wins for our finned friends! A monumental initiative by the Trout Unlimited North Coast Coho Project is making waves rescuing California’s southernmost coho salmon. This unique run of coho salmon, at the southern extent of the species' range, has teetered on the brink of extinction, making it one of our Species in the Spotlight. Janet Coit, NOAA Fisheries Assistant Administrator, presented the Partnership in the Spotlight Award to Trout Unlimited for their amazing work partnering with timber companies, grape growers, private landowners and state and federal agencies to restore habitat for endangered coho salmon. It's the largest such initiative in California. The tide is turning—let's continue to swim together for a stronger future! Credit: Katja Bresch #ConservationWin #SaveTheSalmon
