Join Us: Wed., Jan. 6 to Learn About AmeriCorps and Presidential Inaugural Committee Collaboration on MLK Day of Service

MLK Day

Greetings,

The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service is an opportunity for all Americans to unite and serve at a time when the global pandemic calls for us to work together and support our communities. It is our goal that the MLK Day of Service will provide needed support for communities and inspire commitments to serve throughout 2021 and beyond.

AmeriCorps, the federal agency designated by Congress in 1994 to lead this day of service, is pleased to announce our collaboration with the Presidential Inaugural Committee for President-elect Joseph R. Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on the annual National Day of Service occurring on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

On Monday, Jan. 18, we are calling on individuals, organizations, and companies to host virtual or socially distanced service projects across the country to celebrate and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We invite you and your organization to collaborate with AmeriCorps and the Presidential Inaugural Committee on this year’s MLK Day of Service by hosting a service event to engage volunteers in your community.

Service projects will be largely focused on COVID-19 relief and address challenges and circumstances made worse by the pandemic, including hunger, racial injustice, homelessness, mental health, educational disparities, and economic opportunity. Service opportunities will be primarily virtual with limited socially distanced in-person events in adherence to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, state, and local safety guidelines and protocols. Examples of projects include drive-through food or clothing drives, writing thank you cards to frontline workers or get-well cards to COVID-19 patients, neighborhood clean-ups, and teach-ins. For project ideas and resources or to find a volunteer opportunity, visit MLKDay.gov.

If you would like to host a service event, please fill out this form. Details about your service event will appear on the inaugural committee’s website for MLK Day of Service events. We are hosting a webinar on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time to provide further information about our collaboration on the National Day of Service and how you can join with us.
