You can more details about the maintenance schemes taking place in the West Midlands below:

We’ll be carrying out essential maintenance work on the A38/M5 J5 roundabouts. As part of this work, we’ll be resurfacing the road, renewing road markings and upgrading traffic signals to provide a smoother and safer carriageway for road users. We’ll also be carrying out tree felling and vegetation clearance for better access to footways.

We’ll work Monday to Friday from 12 February 2024 to 22 March 2024. To reduce disruption to the surrounding area, we’ll be working at night between 9pm and 6am.

To maintain safety, we’ll install closures of the A38/M5 J5 roundabout, which will move along the roundabouts as work progresses. During closures, we’ll install fully signed diversions.

Southbound diversion:

Northbound diversion:

Access for emergency service vehicles and for residents of Amplett Way will be maintained throughout.

During our programme of work, we’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum. We always aim to work to programme, however unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may mean changes.

Please plan ahead and allow additional time for your journey.

We’d also encourage drivers to stick to speed limits and follow appropriate signage to ensure the safety of all road users.

We’ll be carrying out repairs to the safety barrier in the central reservation along the A38 between Toyota Island and Mickleover. We’ll also be carrying out vegetation clearance and grass cutting along this section. Our work will ensure that the safety barrier and vegetation is well maintained to ensure we continue to provide safe travel through the Midlands.

When will this work take place?

We plan to start work on Monday 8 April 2024, and we expect to finish by the end of June 2024. Our work will take place on when traffic counts are lower, between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday. However, there may be some additional weekend work needed.

To carry out our work safely, we’ll work under a combination of full carriageway closures and lane closures, between Toyota Island and the A516 junction at Mickleover.

This work will be carried out under the following phases:

  • Phase 1 – 8 April to 19 April – full northbound carriageway closures from Toyota Island to the A516 Mickleover junction. A southbound lane 2 closure will be in place during these times.
  • Phase 2 – 22 April to 17 May – full southbound carriageway closures from A516 Mickleover junction to Toyota Island. A northbound lane 2 closure will be in place during these times.

  • Phase 4 – 10 June to 21 June – southbound lane closures from A516 Mickleover junction to Toyota Island.

During closures the following diversion route will be in place:

A38 Toyota to Mickleover diversion for northbound and southbound

A38 Findern Interchange to Toyota Island southbound diversion

We’re sorry for the disruption this work may cause to your journey and we encourage drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time when travelling. All closures are subject to change at short notice due to unforeseen circumstances or poor weather conditions. We’ll keep this web page updated with any changes.

The eastbound carriageway of the A40 has recently been closed due to a rock fall near Leys Bend, east of Monmouth.

We apologise for any disruption this has caused, however, public safety is our top priority. Before reopening the road, we needed to fully understand the stability of the rock face so measures could be put in place for traffic to safely return to the road.

On Monday 19 February, we successfully opened lane two on the A40 eastbound carriageway with a reduced speed limit of 40mph. Lane one currently remains closed, and we have installed a temporary concrete barrier to seperate the area from traffic and to stop any material from falling into lane two.

We’re regularly monitoring network performance and traffic in the area, to understand if there are any additional measures we can put in place to improve journeys for road users.

We’re currently working on plans for repairing the hillside and rockface above the A40 at Leys Bend. Due to the complex nature of this incident, and loose material on the hillside, it is likely that this work will take several months to plan and complete.

Repair work will be designed and led by engineering specialists, to ensure the long-term stability of the hillside. In the meantime, we aim to keep lane two running. However, additional risks may be identified during surveys, and we may need to install further closures whilst safety measures are put in place.

We’ll make every effort to ensure that noise levels and any impact on the local community and travelling public are kept to a minimum.

Update:

We've now completed the safety barrier upgrades and we'll be returning on Thursday 21 March to complete the remaining drainage remedial work's.

We’ll be carrying out essential maintenance work on the A46 in Leek Wootton. As part of this work, we'll be completing safety barrier upgrades along the A46 northbound between Leek Wootton and Kenilworth, as the current barriers have now reached the end of their serviceable life.

We’ll work Monday to Friday from 11 March 2024 to 22 March 2024. To reduce disruption to the surrounding area, we’ll be working at night between 10pm and 6am.

To complete our work safely, the A46 will be reduced to single lane running. However, to install our traffic management each night, we’ll install a simple diversion using the exit and entry slip at Budbrooke.

Diversion:

We’ll make every effort to ensure that noise levels and any impact on the local community and travelling public are kept to a minimum. We always aim to work to the programme, however unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may mean changes.

Please accept our apologies in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

We carried out work on the A46 SRLPEI scheme last year which included installing a number of masts along the A46. These have been designed to capture renewable energy to power future technology. We’re returning to complete construction works which include an additional seven masts along the A46. Once installed, we’ll be able to provide relevant driver information via our variable messaging signs.

We’ll also install technology to provide information on the road condition. The aim of this technology is to help inform our customers of journey times, road conditions and improve safety. This will also allow drivers to plan their journey better or select alternative routes. This is a first step in reducing our carbon footprint by using renewable energy to power our technology.

We’ll work throughout the day, Monday to Friday. Construction will take place using lane closures and two-way temporary lights. These will be installed along the verge between Back Lane and Beckford Road. We’ll also complete outstanding work to two of the existing sites. There will be additional work required after February, but this will be to install, test and commission equipment.

We’d encourage drivers to stick to speed limits and follow appropriate signage to ensure the safety of those working on site and fellow road users.

We’ll do our very best to complete the work as quickly as possible, keeping disturbances and noise to a minimum.

We’ll be carrying out essential maintenance work on the A49 between Wilton roundabout and B4348 Llandinabo. As part of this work, we’ll be renewing road markings and road studs to provide a clearer, safer carriageway for road users. We’ll also be carrying out small sections of resurfacing along with replacing road signs and traffic bollards.

We’ll work overnight, between 8pm and 6am, from 25 March to 24 May 2024, Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays).

To maintain safety and reduce disruption, we’ll work within phased closures of the A49 between Wilton roundabout and B4348 Llandinabo. Further information will be provided at the side of the road using the black and yellow signs.

During closures, fully signed diversions will be in place.

Access to frontages along with emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout.

We’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum. We always aim to work to the programme, however unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may mean changes.

We’ll be carrying out safety barrier upgrades on the eastbound exit slip road of the A5 at Atherstone. Our work has been identified as the barriers here have reached the end of their serviceable life and now need to be replaced.

To carry out our work safely, we’ll work under the following closures:

From Thursday 14 March to Wednesday 20 March, we’ll have full closures of the A5 eastbound exit slip road, with a single lane closure of the A5 eastbound mainline carriageway. These closures will be in place 24/7.

On the nights of Thursday 21 March, Friday 22 March, Monday 25 March, Tuesday 26 March and Wednesday 27 March, between 8pm and 6am, we’ll have full closures of the A5 eastbound exit slip road, with a single lane closure on the A5 eastbound mainline carriageway.

During these closures, there will be access for emergency vehicles and the following diversion route will be in place:

We’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum. We always aim to work to the programme, however unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may cause changes.

Please accept our apologies in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

We’ll be carrying out resurfacing on A5 Watling Street, between and including A5/A4601 Longford Island and A5/A460 Churchbridge Interchange. Our work at this location has been identified following the deterioration of the carriageway. Our work will also include the replacement of road markings and road studs providing a safer road.

Please see the map below which shows the locations of each phase:

During closures, the following diversion will be in place which has been agreed with Staffordshire County Council:

Access to frontages with direct access from the A5 within the closures along with emergency vehicles will be maintained throughout. However, there may be times when access is restricted, but our contractor and public liaison officer will liaise with any of the affected parties nearer the time to make alternative arrangements.

We’re sorry for the disruption this work may cause to your journey and we encourage drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time when travelling. All closures are subject to change at short notice due to unforeseen circumstances or poor weather conditions. We’ll keep this web page updated with any changes.

We’ll be carrying out surveys to the drains to determine their current condition, along with low level maintenance work. This will ensure the drains are working as designed or help us to identify areas that are in need of repair.

We’ll work overnight, between 8pm and 6am, 25 March 2024 to 10 May 2024, Monday to Friday. Our work will be carried out as follows:

25 March to 27 March and 2 April to 5 April – Temporary traffic lights on the A483 between Mile End roundabout and the B5069.

During closures we’ll install the following fully signed diversion route via the A483, the A458 and the A5.

Access for emergency services will be maintained throughout.

If you’d like to be kept up to date with future work along the A483, please subscribe to our mailing list by emailing noreplyA483WMids@nationalhighways.co.uk.

We’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum. We always aim to work to the programme, however unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may mean changes.

We’d also encourage drivers to stick to speed limits and follow appropriate signage to ensure the safety of all road users.

We’ll be carrying out essential targeted resurfacing work on the A458 between the England/Wales border and Churncote Roundabout.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have an additional shift to complete in this location. This work will take place overnight, between 9pm and 6am, on Monday 22 April 2024.

To carry out our work safely, there will be a full closure of the A458 in both directions between Churncote Roundabout and the A458/Yockleton Road junction.

During closures we’ll install the following fully signed diversion route via the A458, A483 and the A5. Westbound traffic will follow the same diversion route in reverse.

During this time, access to frontages will be maintained as well as access for emergency vehicles.

If you’d like to be kept up to date with future work along the A458, please subscribe to our mailing list by emailing noreplyA458WMids@nationalhighways.co.uk.

The bridge which carries the A452 over the M42 motorway between junctions 7 (M6 J4) and 6 (near the NEC, Resorts World, Birmingham Airport and International station) was struck by over height HGVs on two occasions in January.

Overnight closures

To enable the demolition of the bridge, preparatory work is being carried out on the M42 between junctions 6 and 9 involving a full overnight closure in both directions each weekday night:

  • Monday 29 January to Friday 2 February between 10pm and 5am

  • Monday 5 February to Thursday 8 February between 10pm and 5am

Full weekend closure for demolition

The bridge will then be removed under a full weekend closure of the M42 between junction 6 and junction 9 in both directions from 9pm on Friday 9 February to 5am Monday 12 February 2024.

The closure of the M42 between junctions 6-9 will mean that planning an alternative route is advised.

Plan ahead

Leave more time for your journey. If you need to travel on the M42, A446, A452, A45 or M6 in this area, please be aware you are likely to experience delays to your journey.

A clearly signed diversion route and signage will be in place over this period to help remind motorists of the closure.

You can still get to where you need to go but you’ll need to follow the diversion, plan ahead and leave more time for journeys.

We’re going to be working beneath the M5 viaduct between junction 1 and junction 2, carrying out planned maintenance. This maintenance is a continuous activity that happens beneath the viaducts in the West Midlands to ensure the motorways keep connecting the country.

We’re installing a system that prevents the deterioration of the steel reinforcement which in turn protects the concrete from damage. This reduces the need for future maintenance, meaning less roadworks impacting the motorways.

Our work will be below the viaduct and will have no impact on the M5 itself. The work will take place during the day. We may need some localised overnight closures of roads beneath the viaduct to set up the scaffolding for our work to take place. These will be minimal and diversions only very short. Where the works affect a local road, we will work with the local councils to find the safest and least impactful way to undertake the works.

We will do our very best to complete the work as quickly as possible, keeping disturbances and noise to a minimum. We always aim to work to the programme, however unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may mean changes.

If you’d like to be kept up to date with this work and future work along the M5, please subscribe to our mailing list by emailing noreplyM5WMids@nationalhighways.co.uk.

We’ll be carrying out resurfacing and bridge joint repairs along the M6 between junction 8 and 10 due to the deteriorating condition of the road here. Our work will ensure that the structure and carriageway are well maintained and continue to provide safe travel through the Midlands.

When will this work take place?

We plan to start work on Monday 8 April 2024, and we expect to finish by the end of November 2024. Our work will take place on when traffic counts are lower, between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday. However, there may be some additional weekend work needed.

To carry out our work safely, we’ll work under a combination of full carriageway closures and lane closures, between junction 7 and 10. We’ll start work on the southbound, from 8 April to 18 July, and then work on the northbound, from 18 July to 16 November.

This work will be carried out under the following phases:
