Underemployment—when your employment does not match your desires, education or experience—affects 63 percent of military spouses, according to the Blue Star Families 2021 Military Families Lifestyle Survey. As the population of female Veterans grows, challenges arise when they look for a civilian job.

To help alleviate the employment concerns of female Veterans and military spouses, AARP teamed up with Blue Star Families to hold a virtual town hall highlighting job search tips and resources.

“When you’re a Veteran or military spouse, it can be challenging to know where to start your job search and how to get employers to understand how your job skills and military experience relate to a new position,” said Troy Broussard, senior adviser of the AARP Veterans and Military Families Initiative and a U.S. Army Desert Storm Veteran. “That’s why we teamed up with Blue Star Families to help female Veterans and military spouses learn how to effectively leverage their military backgrounds to give them an edge in today’s competitive job market.”

“Military spouses and female Veterans are looking for opportunities to make networking connections and receive help in preparing for job interviews,” said Blue Star Families CEO Kathy Roth-Douquet. “During this event, one attendee commented, ‘Thank you for connecting everyone! My LinkedIn is blowing up, and I love it! Love this incredible community!’”
