Summer Learning Updates


Due to COVID-19, several changes have been made to FCPS Summer Learning opportunities. School buildings will remain closed through July as recommended by the county health department. See program-specific information below.

Available Summer Learning Opportunities


Mathematics and Literacy Continuity of Learning: Current grades K-8

Elementary and middle school students will have the opportunity to review concepts and skills using self-directed print and digital materials. Selected teachers from each school will have weekly office hours from June 29 through July 31 to provide feedback and support to students in literacy and mathematics. This program is optional and is free to all students.

More information will be shared by your student’s school in June.

 

ESOL Online: Language and Literacy Connections: Current grades 7-12

  • Monday, June 22-Tuesday, July 14
  • Morning session: 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., daily
  • Evening session: 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., daily

ESOL Language and Literacy Connections is an online, three-week, non-credit class that provides FCPS middle and high school English Learners the opportunity to engage in thematic English language lessons in an online environment with an ESOL teacher. Students develop their academic reading and writing skills in online discussions with an ESOL teacher. 

Online registration closes Friday, June 5 Registration will be open through Friday, June 5. Contact your ESOL teacher for registration details.

 

Virtual Credit Recovery: English 9 and 10 for ELs: ELP Levels 1-3

Virtual Credit Recovery is an opportunity for students to recover one high-school course credit and receive a grade. 

Over three weeks, students will:

  • Take part in daily synchronous learning sessions with their teacher.
  • Complete daily online learning modules at their own pace (asynchronous).

Teachers will have office hours at set times and by appointment for students to ask questions. Teachers will provide this information to the students. These courses are designed for FCPS ELP level 1, 2, and 3 students who have received a failing grade in English 9 or English 10.

These courses are aligned to the WIDA English language development (ELD) standards and the English 9 and English 10 SOL.

Registration will be open from through Friday, June 12. Contact your counselor teacher for registration details.

 

High School Continuity of Learning: Current grades 9-12

All high school students will have the opportunity to review concepts and skills using self-directed digital materials. Students will practice mathematics and literacy skills and participate in virtual office hours with selected math or language arts teachers for support and connection. Teachers will be available for one hour per week from June 29 through July 31 to support students. This program is optional and is free to all students.

More information will be provided before the end of the school year.

 

High School Virtual Credit Recovery

Virtual Credit Recovery is a free opportunity for students to recover one high-school course credit and receive a grade.

Over three weeks, students will:

  • Take part in daily synchronous learning sessions with their teacher.
  • Complete daily online learning modules at their own pace (asynchronous).

Teachers will have office hours at set times and by appointment for students to ask questions. Schools will provide this information to the students.

Classes will be held July 6 through July 24. 

 

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology

Thomas Jefferson will offer three virtual courses for its students. Students can earn one credit for a full-year course and one-half credit for each semester course. Students may not take a TJHSST program course and an online campus course during the summer

Academic

Full Year Course:

  • Computer Science
  • Dates: Monday, June 22 to Thursday, July 30, 2020 (No classes July 3)
  • Tuition: Full - $375; Reduced Lunch - $187.50; Free Lunch - $37.50

Semester Courses: 

  • Research Statistics 1, rising 9th grade students only
  • TJ Math 5, current 9-11th grade students
  • Dates: Monday, July 6 to Friday, July 31, 2020
  • Tuition: Full - $375; Reduced Lunch - $187.50; Free Lunch - $37.50

Online registration will be open Wednesday, May 20 through Friday, June 12.

 

TJHSST Skill Enhancement Courses

The skill enrichment courses are designed to focus on various skills development and supplement certain curricula. These modules will have synchronous and asynchronous opportunities for students. We encourage students to register for a course if they desire additional support with specific content areas or skills. The modules are not required, not for credit and not graded. Students may register for multiple courses as long as the schedule does not conflict. For details see the school webpage.

Registration: June 3 – July 1

Course Dates: July 6-31

Open to TJ Students only.

All courses are free of charge, no credit or weigh given.

 

Online Campus: Current grades 7-12

  • HPE 9 and HPE 10: Monday, June 22-Thursday, July 23
  • Honors Geometry: Monday, June 22-Thursday, July 30
  • Algebra 2 Head Start: Monday, July 20-Friday, July 24
  • All other courses: Monday, June 22-Wednesday, July 22

Time: Synchronous lessons during the day determined by instructor

These courses provide opportunities for credit recovery and acceleration for eligible middle school and high school students.

Self-Directed Economics and Personal Finance: Current grades 8-12

  • Monday, March 30 - Friday, July 31 

This online course is for current FCPS students and is pass/fail only.

Other Summer Learning Opportunities


ESY

Extended School Year (ESY) Learning Communities:  Current grades PreK-12

ESY provides services for identified students with disabilities in accordance with their individualized education programs (IEPs).

This summer, ESY class-based services will be provided virtually to students June 29-July 24. The instruction will be provided through the distance learning model with synchronous sessions with students, learning materials available online, and packets sent through the mail to students.
