CHARLESTON, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) today applauded U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Sonny Perdue’s announcement that the department will extend several school meal flexibilities through as late as December 31, 2020. The flexibilities will allow summer meal program operators to continue serving free meals to all children into the fall months.

Last week, Senator Capito joined with several colleagues in a letter asking Secretary Perdue to continue providing flexibilities to schools and sponsoring organizations for school meals and child nutrition. Today’s announcement is a direct response to that letter.

“Teachers, students, and parents alike have all had to embrace flexibility leading into the school year. I’m glad to see USDA adapting with that same flexibility. Children may feel uncertain about many things this year, but this announcement means they will not feel uncertain about their next nutritious meal,” Senator Capito said.
