Report on the Recommendation to the Council, the Commission and the Vice-President of the Commission/High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on relations with Belarus

Question for written answer  E-000227/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Milan Uhrík (NI)

Neither the legislative nor the presidential elections held in Belarus since 1994 until the present day have ever been free or fair. The most recent presidential elections held in Belarus were neither free nor fair, and to an even greater extent than in previous elections were marred by violations of the fundamental freedoms of assembly, association and expression.

The European Parliament, similarly to the EU as a whole, expresses its support for the Belarusian people’s demands for free and fair elections and for the ability to freely make decisions about their country’s future. It welcomes the holding of peaceful national protests and encourages them to continue.

In light of the foregoing:

Will the Commission take a similar approach to condemning the restrictive policies implemented by Ukraine in the Donbas, where citizens’ rights are being flagrantly violated by the efforts of the central government in Kyiv to bring the region under its control by force?
