Michigan is reporting 1,358 new coronavirus cases and 104 deaths for Saturday, Jan. 30, although the majority of the deaths were from a review of death certificates.

The data released shows a continued downward trend in new cases.

Of Saturday’s death total, all but 11 cases were late additions found during a routine review of death certificates. As such, they did not necessarily happen in the last 24 hours.

The state now has recorded 559,241 cases since the pandemic began in March, as well as 14,601 deaths.

Along with the drop in daily cases, the percentage of positive cases compared to tests administered also continues to improve.

Saturday’s data shows the positivity rate at 4.4 percent, based on 41,497 total tests. The rate has been below 5 percent for the last three days.

Earlier in the pandemic, health officials set a benchmark of 3 percent “postivity” as a gauge to show that coronavirus spread was under control.

The number of people in Michigan hospitals with COVID-19 also continues to drop. The latest data shows 1,447 people hospitalized with suspected or confirmed COVID-19, with 364 people in intensive care units.

About one week ago, there were 1,843 total coronavirus patients. Two weeks ago, the were 2,222 patients.

The state releases data on coronavirus recoveries once per week.

As of Friday, Jan. 29, the total recoveries were at 481,801 people. A recovery is deemed to be a person who is still alive 30 days beyond on the onset of COVID-19 symptoms.
