Kentucky Afield Television: Rocket-Netting and Banding Turkeys

Staff with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) captured and banded turkeys during the winter for a research project being conducted in partnership with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) and Tennessee Tech University (TTU).

This 4-year study is designed to help our agencies assess hunting regulations. The goal is to estimate harvest rates of turkeys in Kentucky and Tennessee. Harvest rate refers to the proportion of male turkeys in a population that get harvested by hunters. This is an important measure of hunting pressure on each state’s turkey population. Also, we are collecting blood and other biological samples to assess the health of our turkey population.

By reporting your turkey’s leg band number, you are providing valuable information to ensure sustainable management of wild turkeys for current and future generations to enjoy. After entering your band number, you will be provided with the county and date your turkey was banded.

Thank you for your cooperation!
