Responsibilities include: 

  • Perform entry level duties working at a recreation center, athletic facility, or within a recreation program and provide safe and dependable after school care for elementary age children, supervises youth and communicates with parents and staff. 
  • Lead structured and non-structured recreation, arts, childcare, and sports activities/programs. 
  • Help create a positive, safe, and nurturing environment for children, teens, and adults at a recreation center, athletic facility, or within a recreation program. 
  • Greet and assist customers at the front desk or over the phone. Provide information, answer questions, and customer service. 
  • Collect fees and register participants for activities and programs. 
  • Assists in keeping records and compiling information such as attendance, incident and accident reporting. 
  • Prepares spaces for activities such as putting up volleyball and pickleball nets, setting up gym scoreboard, and setting up tables and chairs for facility rentals. 
  • Administers CPR and First Aid treatment to participants if needed until medical assistance is available.
  • Does light cleaning, takes out trash, cleans windows, operates recreation and maintenance equipment, and may shovel snow as needed.
  • Works a flexible schedule which may include days, evenings, weekends, and some holidays. 
Recreation Centers are public facilities that are open to everyone and specific emphasis is placed on ensuring our spaces are equitable and programs and services are representative of community interest.

Information specific to the permanent (certified) year round position: This position requires employees to work at least 20 hours per week which can include days, evenings, weekends, and some holidays. The Parks and Recreation Department hosts 26 Recreation Centers across the city in addition to program offerings held within spaces such as regional or passive parks and public schools. Recreation Leaders are typically assigned to a defined facility or program but are also expected to assist at other locations if a program need presents itself. Position Requirements

Must be at least 16 years of age.

Preferred qualifications:

  • High school graduation or General Education Development certificate (GED) equivalency. Paid or volunteer experience working with youth or adults in a recreation, school, and/or customer service setting.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which can include days, evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

Eligible Lists Created from Open Job Posting: 
You must receive a score of 75% or higher to pass the assessment and be considered for the position. Non-promotion eligible lists typically are pass/fail and promotion eligible lists are typically ranked. If the open eligible list created contains a veteran, one open list will exist. When there are no veterans remaining on the eligible list (i.e. hired, withdrawn) from an open list that also contains promotional candidates, two lists will be created: one open list and one promotion list. If two lists exist, the promotion list must be exhausted before the open list is considered.

Final Selection Process: Those who pass will be placed on an eligible list for approximately six months and all will be notified of their status. A Hiring Manager will consider those applicants eligible for hire. You will be notified if you are invited to participate in the final selection process which may include an interview, job simulation, work sample submission, or other evaluation method.
