Georgia businesses are estimated to lose over $3 billion to retail theft annually. Hear from Attorney General Chris Carr on the work being done to address this issue across the state. “At a time when it’s incredibly difficult to hire staff, where workforce is cited as one of the most significant challenges facing businesses of all sizes, the additional concern a potential employee now has is for his or her own personal safety,” said Carr. “It’s imperative that both the public and private sector come together to share information and resources to dismantle these increasingly violent and brazen networks once and for all, and that’s exactly what we intend to do.”

The Attorney General’s Gang Prosecution Unit is expanding to Muscogee County starting July 2024! This statewide unit was first created by Attorney General Chris Carr nearly two years ago. Since then, the team has secured nearly 40 convictions and indicted 135 individuals in Athens-Clarke, Barrow, Bryan, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Dougherty, Fulton, Gwinnett, Laurens, Muscogee, Richmond and Thomas counties. This includes four murder convictions and six gang convictions secured in Columbus over the past six months alone. The Gang Prosecution Unit is led by Senior Assistant Attorney General Cara Convery and is housed in Carr’s Prosecution Division, which is overseen by Deputy Attorney General John Fowler.

Investigator Thompson recently joined law enforcement partners in Pittsburgh to receive the award for FBI Safe Streets “Case of the Year.” This recognition stems from a multi-agency effort that resulted in the indictment of 23 individuals in the Northern District of Georgia. All of the defendants are alleged to be members and associates of Sex Money Murder, and they’re charged with racketeering, drug trafficking, and firearms offenses. Both Investigators Thompson and Murdock of the Attorney General’s Gang Prosecution Unit provided meaningful assistance throughout this investigation that involved various local, state, and federal agencies. The Attorney General’s Prosecution Division is expanding! Attorney General Chris Carr is set to create Georgia’s first statewide Organized Retail and Cyber Crime Unit, with funding provided in the state’s FY 2025 budget signed today by Governor Brian Kemp. This new unit will take effect on July 1, 2024, with prosecutors and investigators dedicated to addressing organized retail theft and cybercrimes across the state. “From North Georgia and metro Atlanta to South Georgia and the coast, we have seen unprecedented success in putting away some of Georgia’s most dangerous criminals,” said Carr. “Now we’re strengthening our efforts to combat an alarming increase in retail theft and cybercrime.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/emMHgydp

Today, Attorney General Chris Carr announced that his office’s Gang Prosecution Unit has secured a new 333-count indictment charging 30 individuals in Richmond County. This latest update follows a major multi-agency investigation into the distribution of illegal narcotics and other acts of violence that have occurred throughout the CSRA. As asserted in the indictment, the defendants are associates of a hybrid criminal street gang known as Trap Money (TRVPMONEYY). As such, they are alleged to have conspired to obtain money, firearms, controlled substances, and other property by engaging in a pattern of criminal activity, including Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer, Armed Robbery, Theft, Trafficking in Fentanyl, Meth and Cocaine, and various weapons offenses.
