Carr Leads Bipartisan Coalition Backing Federal Legislation to Combat Contraband Cell Phones Inmates are using contraband cell phones to direct murders, scams, and other deadly and dangerous crimes from behind bars. To more effectively address this issue and ensure the safety of those both inside and outside our correctional facilities, Attorney General Chris Carr is leading a bipartisan coalition of 31 attorneys general in urging Congress to pass legislation that allows states to deploy cell phone jamming devices in prisons and jails. “We have heard from law enforcement throughout the state that our most effective solution is to jam the signal and make contraband cell phones obsolete, yet federal policies continue to block our efforts,” said Carr. “We’re committed to combating violent crime wherever it occurs, which is why we’re once again calling on Congress to remove this substantial barrier to public safety.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eiVNDDH2

Carr Secures Fifth Conviction in Human Trafficking, Gang Case in Gwinnett County This week, Attorney General Chris Carr announced that Hilton Dobbins, Jr., 35, of Atlanta, has been sentenced to 20 years after pleading guilty to human trafficking, gang, and racketeering charges in Gwinnett County. This investigation began on May 19, 2022, when the Gwinnett County Police Department responded to a shooting involving defendants Sean Harvey and Sean Curry. Following an initial arrest, investigators learned that Harvey, Curry, and other defendants are suspected members of the Last One To Take Over Gang (aka LOTTO or 30% Gang), a hybrid criminal street gang with ties to national Crips and the Gangster Disciples. Dobbins is the fifth defendant to be convicted in this case so far. The State’s case against the four remaining defendants is active and ongoing. This was a joint effort by the Attorney General’s Human Trafficking and Gang Prosecution Units, with Assistant Attorney General Kaitlyn Salinas and Assistant Attorney General Thomas Kegley handling the prosecution. The case was investigated by the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office Special Investigations Section. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eK_s98_b

First #POP of the week was today at the State of Georgia Office of the Attorney General - Customer Protection Division. The Georgia Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division’s Mission is to protect Georgia consumers and legitimate businesses from unlawful, deceptive and unfair practices in the marketplace by enforcement of the laws they administer and through education. The Statutes CPD Enforces: * Fair Business Practices Act * Georgia Lemon Law * Debt Adjustment Act * Sale of Business Opportunities and Multilevel Distribution Companies Act * Buying Services Act * Charitable Solicitations Act Students learned about Open Records Requests, Money Matters, Debt Collections, Credit Repair, Automobile Complaints, Consumer Education, Identity Theft and Scams - the most recent being the Peach Pass Scam 🍑 The scam messages falsely claim recipients owe money on unpaid tolls or Peach Pass accounts, threatening penalties or legal action if they do not pay.
