Philippines earthquake: Deadly tremors strike again killing five and destroying homes

THE PHILIPPINES has been struck by yet another deadly magnitude 6.5 earthquake in just two days, killing five and destroying hundreds of homes.

Philippines: Hotel left in ruins after earthquake hits Mindanao

The huge quake rocked the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Thursday, killing five peple in the North Cotabato province. During the deadly quake - which struck at a depth of 10km - at least 10 people were thought to be trapped inside Eva's Hotel in Kidapawan, according to the New York Times. However, the town's mayor later confirmed that no one was inside at the time. The United States Geological Survey has said the quake was magnitude-6.5 and hit around 25 miles southwest of Davao City in Kisante. Philippine's President Rodrigo Duterte was in the area when it happened but was not harmed.

The area has a population of around 1.6 million people.

So far, there have been no reports of casualties or widespread damage in the area.

On Tuesday, another earthquake caused a large amount of destruction in the same region.

Tuesday’s quake, which was a whopping magnitude 6.6, killed eight people and wiped out schools and other buildings.

Two other people have been recorded as missing along with 395 more injured.

Around 2,700 houses and buildings including hospitals have been destroyed, according to the Office of Civil Defence.

On October 16, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake killed another seven people and destroyed more than 7,000 buildings.

The region of the Philippines is known for its frequent seismic activity.

The islands are situated on the infamous “Ring of Fire” where most of the world’s earthquakes take place.

Another country on the Ring of Fire is Japan, who was rattled by a magnitude 4.7 earthquake on Monday night.

The tremor struck 178 miles south-southeast of Kushiro, in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

The earthquake saw an alert level raised for a volcano on an island in Kagoshima Prefecture, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency.

The volcano warning level for Mount Shindake on Kuchinoerabu Island was upgraded from 2 to 3 on a scale of 5.
